Job Description

Summary

Core duties including microtomy, immunohistochemistry procedures, cover slipping, quality control procedures, processing reference laboratory send outs, quality control, and digital pathology. Ability to follow established procedures, identify issues, troubleshoot, escalate issues to management. Maintains laboratory instrumentation with daily maintenance and scheduling maintenance as needed. Assists in training as assigned. Functions at a maximum level efficiency with effective communication.

Job Duties

  • Performs core histology duties.
  • Obtains orders from LIS and e-mail and pulls appropriate blocks of tissue to cut slides for IHC procedures.  
  • Loads slides and IHC staining components on an automated stainer. 
  • Coverslips slides using an automated coverslipper or manually as needed. 
  • Performs quality control throughout all processes to ensure accuracy and that high-quality materials are produced.  
  • Scans slides into digital pathology scanner and upload images to appropriate cases.  
  • Has ability to follow established procedures.
  • Follows established procedures at all times and does not deviate in an attempt to save time.
  • Has ability to troubleshoot.
  • Has ability to identify issues and troubleshoot by route cause analysis and create a plan of correction.  
  • Functions with efficiency and clear communication.
  • Has ability to multitask without compromising quality or efficiency.  
  • Possesses strong organizational skills in order to stay on task and meet deadlines.  
  • Communicates verbally and written to management and coworkers when issues arise or when communicating information pertaining to shift handoff. 
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Histologic Technician AAS program, accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
  • Five years of experience in Histology.
  • Certified Histology Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Bachelors degree by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program.
