Job Description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Functional Coatings Group in the Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory to conduct advanced research in thin film coatings. The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in advancing our research project applying thin film coating technology to develop improved membranes and sorbents for water treatment. In particular, the new hire will use atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) to tailor the physical and chemical properties of polymer membranes and sorbents to improve the selectivity, efficiency, and anti-fouling capabilities of materials used in water treatment functions. The postdoctoral appointee will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and multi-institutional team as part of the Advanced Materials for Energy-Water Systems (AMEWS) Energy Frontier Research Center. The postdoctoral appointee is expected to aid in the design, analysis, and interpretation of experiments as well as present findings to the community through publications and presentations.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, or materials science with 0 to 2 years of experience, or the equivalent experience through practical application in a laboratory.

  • Knowledge of and experience with water treatment technology.

  • Knowledge of and experience with atomic layer deposition methods and equipment.

  • Skills working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Skills in oral and written communication.

  • Record of publication and external recognition in these areas.

  • Ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
