Summary
The U-M International Institute (II) brings together distinguished and diverse faculty and scholars with deep area studies and international expertise to enrich the university's intellectual environment and to provide the U-M community with the knowledge, tools, and experience to become informed and active global citizens. We advance this mission through education, engagement, and innovation. The II is home to 17 centers and programs focused on specific world regions and global themes.


The II is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to support the programming and administration of the Center for Emerging Democracies (CED) and the Society for the Social Science Study of China (SSSSOC). CED promotes scholarship to better understand the conditions and policies that foster the transition from autocratic rule to democratic governance, past and present. The Society for the Social Science Study of China (SSSSOC) will be a membership-based organization bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars studying contemporary China. Support for SSSSOC comes from a Luce Foundation grant.

Responsibilities*
CED Public Program & Event Planning (30%)
*Plan CED sponsored lectures/panels, offering center programming on campus and over Zoom in hybrid format. Secure event spaces by following reservation protocols.
*Send invitations to potential speakers on the director's behalf and maintain a productive and timely communication flow with them.
*Promote events and share lecture info with II communications team in a timely fashion to advertise lectures effectively on website calendar, email campaigns, print materials, and social media.
*Coordinate all logistics related to guest speaker's visit to U-M: gather personal details over email and purchase airfare, reserve hotel room, arrange airport transfer, create personalized itinerary, make meal reservations, collect receipts and arrange reimbursement.
*Coordinate with other units to implement cross-disciplinary and cross-regional content and to reach larger audiences.
*Arrange for audio/visual needs including recording, distributing, and archiving media.

CED Administrative Support (15%)
*Organize CED Steering Committee meetings and prepare meeting materials.
*Assist director in creating a stronger CED community by further developing the Associate program of relevant faculty, visiting scholars, and students.
*Maintain CED email groups to ensure that promotional materials are reaching the largest target audience possible.
*Work together with the director to identify and add new faculty and community members to CED mailing lists.
*Write reports and provide content for press releases.
*Review the CED website regularly and send updates to the II communications team.

SSSSOC Outreach and Communications (30%)
*Establish and grow the membership of SSSSOC, focusing on the inclusion of scholars based at research universities and liberal arts colleges, outside of North America, and across methodological and generational differences.
*Develop and maintain a website that will offer a repository of teaching aids, including syllabi, active learning and simulation lessons, and best practices for teaching difficult and sensitive topics.
*Communicate regularly with members about SSSSOC activities and resources.

SSSSOC Annual Meeting Planning (15%)
*Organize the annual SSSSOC meeting and reception held during the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies.
*Organize occasional meetings of the SSSSOC Steering Committee.
*Assist the SSSSOC steering committee in issuing a call for topic proposals each fall and planning the annual meeting.
*Announce and process annual awards that will honor social science scholars.

Budget Oversight and Reporting (10%)
*Track all expenses and provide budget updates to unit manager and center/project directors.
*Submit reimbursement and honorarium requests, tracking payments.
*Retain expense receipts and reconcile P-card expenses in a timely fashion.
*Ensure that university financial policies and procedures are followed.
*Prepare reports for SSSSOC sponsor organization, tracking annual budget and expenditures.

Reporting
The administrative supervisor for this position is the II unit manager for the Global Projects Cluster. The CED director and SSSSOC project director determine the overall goals and strategies for the center/project, and rely on the program coordinator to help implement this vision.



Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in a relevant international or area studies field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with academic program administration and social media. Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills, excellent communication and English language skills. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to handle a variety of tasks and meet deadlines. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace required.
