Job Overview

The Nurse Practitioner has the unique opportunity to combine research and clinical care as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a dynamic academic environment. They recruit, care for, and promote the retention of subjects enrolled in the Target ALS biomarker; assist with related studies with a diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease and from healthy control subjects in order to further study these diseases; and provide oversight to all trial related procedures, in a collaborative and leadership capacity, with significant potential for professional development.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to engagement in community outreach and educational programs designed if needed. As well, they may perform provider assessments for other neuromuscular clinical trials within the Neurology Department, if primary responsibilities are met.

Clinical care responsibilities include proficient assessment and diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases; and as part of an interdisciplinary team, they practice independently and collaboratively in providing state of the art care to patients with ALS disease and related disorders and their families.

The Nurse Practitioner ensures that the Target ALS study is conducted in compliance with the protocol, International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and the applicable regulatory requirements, United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 45 CFR Part 46 and Title 21 CFR Parts 50, 56, and 312.

As a professional staff member, the Nurse Practitioner maintains their credentialing requirements.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Under the direct supervision of Brent T. Harris, MD, PhD, FCAP and Nicholas Streicher, MD MPH - the study’s Principal Investigators, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates with MedStar Neurologists, Study Sponsors, and Clinical Research Organizations to ensure quality of care and ethical treatment of subjects enrolled in the clinical trial.

They also interact with the clinical, research and administrative staffs of the Neuromuscular Division and the Clinical Research Unit; and work directly with study subjects, study informants, study monitors and sponsors.

Requirements and Qualifications

Master's degree in Nursing
Current certification/registration with appropriate governmental agencies
2 to 3 years of experience as a nurse practitioner
2 to 3 years of research experience, including protocols and quality assurance
Knowledge of research methods
Exceptional interpersonal skills and detail-orientation
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work both independently and within in team
Attention to detail
Adaptable to unpredictable situations in the patient care setting
