Responsibilities
The Beckstead Lab is looking for a full time Research Technician for the summer to conduct basic research on substance abuse, brain aging, and neurodegenerative disease.

The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to support ongoing projects studying midbrain dopaminergic neurons and related circuits. Duties will include performing survival surgeries on rodents (mostly intracranial virus injections but also possibly including jugular catheter implantation and cannulae placement) and performing procedures for immunohistochemistry (including imaging and analysis). Other duties are varied but could include: preparation and support of patch clamp recordings in rodent brain sections, performing mouse behavioral assays including operant drug self-administration and locomotor assays, and general duties to keep the lab running continuously: ordering supplies and reagents, maintaining an appropriate number of carbogen and oxygen tanks, acting as a liaison with vendors, maintaining equipment, and making buffers and agar plates.


Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree typically in one of the biological sciences and/or equivalent years of relevant lab experience.  Candidates must have basic underestanding of laboratory proesures. Must have experience with rodents, knowledge of basic mouse handling, statistical procedures, as well as methods and practices typical to neuroscience. The candidate must also possess advanced computer skills (or the ability to learn those skills) including data acquisition, Microsoft Office software, order processing, and methods for backing up data. The candidate must be reliable and detail oriented, and also be an effective communicator and follow through on job-related tasks. They must always demonstrate ethical behavior and a high level of scientific rigor and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
