The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University, we provide dental education to the next generation of professionals by offering hands-on education through innovative research, patient care, and service. Join other dental providers to improve the oral health of Georgia and beyond. The DCG was founded to provide the people of Georgia with quality dental care by educating students in dentistry. As a patient, you have the option to receive treatment in one of our three different practice models consisting of student clinics, resident care, or in the faculty practice. All dental treatments can be completed by the specialists in our facility. We also serve patients in more than 20 clinics across Georgia.

Job Summary

Utilization, implementation, and maintenance of 3D printers and other associated Digital Dentistry equipment/software for Student, Resident, Faculty cases. Assist in the installation, inspection, trouble shooting, repair, calibration, and general maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical and electromechanical laboratory instrumentation. Operate a wide variety of mechanical and electromechanical devices and teach others the theory of operation and proper methods for safely and effectively operating equipment.

Responsibilities

The duties included, but not limited to:

LAB SUPPORT Provide lab support for digital dentistry to Students, Residents, and Faculty, including (but not limited to) additive and subtractive CAD/CAM technology. Implementation, utilization, fabrication, and maintenance of 3D printers and equipment are among the responsibilities. Design and fabricate requested appliance, restoration, research fixture, educational model, etc., after determining if the instructions for materials and the desired procedure to achieve the desired outcome are correct. Assist Students, Residents, and Faculty with analog and digital process training. Ensure that all completed work adheres to the highest quality assurance standards (material selection, printing, curing, washing, sintering, etc.).

DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND MANUFACTURE LABORATORY TESTING FIXURES: Design, develop, and manufacture laboratory testing fixtures and devices for dental materials research. Instruct and supervise Departmental Faculty, College of Dental Medicine Faculty, undergraduate, graduate, and visiting students, as well as visiting scholars, industrial representatives, and participants in Continuing Education Courses in test specimen fabrication, testing methods, troubleshooting, and the display and interpretation of test results.

MAINTAIN A SAFE AND WELL EQUIPPED WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Maintain a safe and well-equipped working environment. Assist with the organization of the research lab and the optimization of Dental Materials research operations. Maintain a daily log of research activities and, when necessary, provide a detailed summary of efforts in categorized areas. Perform routine, preventative maintenance on all laboratory equipment, and take preemptive action when there is evidence that equipment is not performing to specifications. Work with dental manufacturers to provide prompt and precise testing of their materials.

PLANNING OF PROJECT PROPOSALS: Participate in the planning of project proposals, focusing on the use of current, existing instruments and/or the design of new instruments for project testing. Assist in problem-solving for new and existing computer programs and computer interface routines. Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair existing laboratory equipment and devices. Maintain current knowledge of laboratory and testing methods, as well as seek out new and innovative testing and analytical techniques for potential application to our facility's requirements.

OTHER DUTIES: Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study with a minimum of three years of related Dental lab experience.

OR

Technical education in Dental/Medical Lab with five years of directly related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in digital dentistry and/or working in a research laboratory (preferably one that is not biologically based). Experience operating and maintaining sensitive and complex laboratory equipment and instruments, experience in troubleshooting and repairing electronic circuitry and electromechanical and purely mechanical devices, experience working with spectroscopy (UVNIS/IR), experience making small, precision specimens, experience with universal testing machines (lnstrons), proficiency with computer skills (programming, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, internet, network), and experience with spectroscopy (UVNIS/IR). Emphasis in basic science, mechanical engineering, or materials science environment including training and experience in keeping laboratory records, backing update, interfacing with existing analog and digital instrumentation, and troubleshooting (solid state, digital, and analog devices).

Certified Dental Technician Certification (CDT)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE
Ability to determine daily work priorities in order to meet all deadlines and maintain quality control. Ensure that the materials and equipment necessary for the operation of the digital dentistry lab are available and in good working condition. Following proper procedures to ensure the Dental College's ability to provide appropriate and safe patient care. Maintaining a high level of excellence for the students and primary health care services for patients, while ensuring that sufficient inventory items are on hand to meet the needs of the DCG.

SKILLS
Participate in the planning of project proposals, particularly with regard to the use of current, existing instruments and/or the design and fabrication of new instruments for project testing. Participate in the decision-making process pertaining to the selection of new laboratory instrumentation or equipment. Determine the optimal use of time for maximizing the completion of studies while providing accurate data. Decisions involving the interpretation of instrumental performance or experimental results in order to determine when a procedure or instrument is not performing as expected. Determine whether an instrument is repairable or requires servicing by the manufacturer.

ABILITIES
Knowledgeable of digital technology (including milling and additive manufacturing, or "3D printing") and the required maintenance of such equipment. Familiar with the fundamental properties of materials and their common application in a dental laboratory. Basic knowledge of polymers, metals, ceramics, chemistry, mechanics, physics, electronics, laboratory record keeping and safety procedures, mathematics (geometry to algebra), computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, graphics), excellent written and verbal skills and hand-eye coordination, the ability to troubleshoot situations, and the capacity to operate machinery (lathe, end mill, band saw, casting machines, universal testing machines, etc.). Knowledge of infectious disease transmission principles; infection prevention and control. Knowledge of dental instruments, materials, and procedures. Experience with conventional laboratory duties and the ability to maintain laboratory equipment utilized in the performance of those duties.
