Department:
The Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team (CARAT) assists CAHSS faculty, departments and centers in all stages of the funding process, from identifying funders and developing proposals, to administering awards and reporting to sponsors. CARAT also supports and strengthens arts, humanities and social science research and creative achievement at UMBC. CARAT is a component of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

CARAT consists of a team of 10 employees. The team assists faculty in obtaining funding for research and creative achievement. The team also provides pre- and post-award administration which is essential to research and creative achievement success within CAHSS and UMBC.

Position Overview:
The Senior Specialist will assist with managing a portion of our current award portfolio, which consists of approximately 75 sponsored awards, as well as assist faculty with grant writing, reviewing and editing at the pre-award stage.

Responsibilities:
The Senior Specialist will be responsible for:

Preparing and managing proposal development and routing process in CARAT, including budget development, RFP review, PI interface, Kuali data input and routing, assist with grant writing, editing and reviewing prior to submission.
Reconciliation and reporting on all research projects in assigned portfolio, working with sponsored projects office on management and setting up of awards, sub awards and budget revisions and ensuring that all transactions are in accordance with Uniform Guidance, UMBC and sponsor policies.
Overall decision-making responsibility for payroll, DBEs and retros for assigned portfolio of awards.
Working with various entities throughout the period of performance to meet the scope of work and accomplish the deliverables. This may include, but is not limited to, setting up programs, assisting with focus groups, training and/or working with community partners.
Supervision for the Business Specialists in CARAT, including providing instruction, guidance and mentoring regarding completion of tasks.
Grant closeout of all awards in assigned portfolio including working with OCGA to close out the awards and facilitate effort report certifications for PIs in assigned portfolio.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree
Two years of grant and/or business administration experience
Strong written and communication skills, as well as the ability to read and interpret grant documents and reports
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree
Four years of grant and/or business administration experience, especially in a higher education, governmental or non-profit setting
Strong written and communication skills with experience in reading, interpreting and preparing grant documents and reports
Familiarity with funders such as foundations, non-profits and private funders, as well as major governmental funders
Ability to work with various software technologies, such as PeopleSoft Financial and Human Resources and Kuali
