Job Description

Summary

The Research Assistant I should be a motivated individual with laboratory expertise who will join a faculty laboratory focused on clinical translational research at the Children's Nutrition Research Center, at Baylor College of Medicine. Will perform the routine elements of research work that requires the use of skills, technical and academic knowledge to maintain the productivity of the laboratory.

Job Duties

  • Perform independently in the laboratory environment and serve as lab supervisor
  • Prepare biologic samples for analysis
  • Participate in the collection of data and accurate data recording
  • Design and perform research experiments and laboratory tests
  • Determine assay methods
  • Document and interpret results of experiments and reporting to principal investigator
  • Create and maintain database and lab inventory
  • Order laboratory supplies and equipment for the research unit
  • Maintenance of equipment in good working condition and of the laboratory environment according to established regulations
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study
  • Organize content of freezers
  • Assist with research tasks, process and shipment of biologic specimen, development of laboratory protocols

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Department Specific Criteria

  • Experience in laboratory techniques (ELISA; Multiplex assays, Colorimetric assays)
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment (e.g. YSI for glucose determination, Roche Elecsys machine operation, Multiplex)
  • Expertise in Isotope preparation for analysis and mass spectrometry are desired additional skills
  • Training in biologic specimen handling and processing; and in various laboratory methods
  • Experience performing laboratory assays and operation of laboratory equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in laboratory science
  • Certifications through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Board of Certification or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) Organization
