Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Central University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) provides information technology services to schools and departments, administrators, staff, students and the growing population of on-line and distance education students. The objectives of ITS is to Improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the administrators, faculty and staff at NCCU through the use of technology, enhance the teaching, learning and research process through the use of technology and to provide adequate support of the technology that is deployed.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Senior Systems Administrator reports to the Director of Infrastructure and serves as a key lead member of the Server team working closely with Information Technology Services (ITS) leadership and working closely with senior administration, academic leaders, and the campus community as needed. The Senior Systems Administrator is an advocate for North Carolina Central University’s overall systems infrastructure inclusive of virtualization, cloud, storage, and research computing operations and planning. This position assists with developing campus system plans and budgets. The candidate must be knowledgeable of complex servers, the cloud, virtualization, and a variety of emerging technologies. The position also works directly with the Information Security department in providing access management and data security. The complexity of this position requires a leadership approach that is engaging, innovative, and collaborative, with a sophisticated ability to work with other leaders to set the best balance between infrastructure, security strategies, and other priorities at the campus level.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· The candidate should possess the ability to work with other IT and non-IT leaders and to set the best balance between operational, project, and planning priorities for the systems team.
· Growing leadership and responsibility in the server/storage Infrastructure and cloud technologies are required.
· Experience with system upgrades, project management, policies, and procedures developed in a complex higher education environment is highly desirable.
· A bachelor’s degree in technology, or another related field, or equal experience is preferred.
· The position requires an intelligent, articulate, consensus-building, and persuasive leader who can work effectively with other IT leaders, technical teams, faculty, staff, and the campus community.
· The ability to communicate information-related concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical staff.
· The ability to exhibit maturity, reliability, composure, and stability under pressure as required for handling on-the-job challenges is essential.
· Must be able to give and receive constructive criticism and feedback.
· Must have experience using enterprise servers and storage infrastructure in both on-premises and cloud implementations.
· Must have a working knowledge of information security, security incident response, and disaster/backup recovery in a higher education environment.
· Must have experience in infrastructure systems technologies including but not limited to virtualization technologies such as VXRail, VMware, Docker containers, or similar data center technologies, Veaam, or other backup technologies is required.
· Must have experience using the following infrastructure systems technologies including but not limited to. VMWare, VXRail, Veeam, Dell’s Data Domain, Cloud immutable backups, Docker Containers, and other similar data center solutions.
· Must have a working knowledge of managing Microsoft enterprise products such as Active Directory, Microsoft System Center Security Management, Office365, Azure networking, Azure AD, Hybrid Exchange, Powershell, file server management, event log monitoring, and other MS Security solutions required.
· Working knowledge and experience with assisting ITS security in the policy and regulatory environment of information security, particularly in higher education, is highly desirable.
Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer science engineering or a closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in operations/systems work or closely related area; or an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in operations/systems work or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
