Department Information
One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

Job Summary
The Bioinformatics Analyst will serve as the bioinformatician for Dr. Jungsu Kim's Lab conducting Alzheimer's disease research studies.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

Manipulates large datasets and performing automated and manual genetic analyses.
Meets with other lab personnel to evaluate individual research projects, provide appropriate analysis from study protocols or standards for research generated data.
Reviews and summarizes analytic results and presents results to individuals.
Assists in grant applications and manuscript preparation.
Trains other lab personnel and trainees in basic bioinformatics.
General Responsibilities

Provides experienced consultation and employs a variety of computational sequence analysis (mathematical and computing) tools to model and analyze biological data in support of researchers.
Accesses, extracts and prepares data for analysis, including combining data run on multiple platforms as well as externally generated data in support of meta-analyses.
Installs, configures, customizes, and supports analytical software for data on research clusters; develops software and programming scripts for software and workflow systems utilized by researchers.
Undertakes performance and reliability assessments to ensure systems are performing to maximum productivity and scientific validity; participates in ongoing evaluation of new software, systems, approaches, and emerging technologies.
Documents consultation, analysis, and quality control efforts; may contribute to grant and report writing.
Researches and stays up-to-date on emerging technologies/tools, trends, standards, and best practices related to bioinformatics.

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, bioinformatics, biology, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

2 years of research technology support, large biological data analysis, or related experience.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
