Job Description

Are you an ambitious researcher with an interest in monitoring greenhouse gas emissions? Do you have an established background in atmospheric modelling and a passion for climate science? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

The School of Earth and Environment (SEE) is seeking to appoint a research scientist in atmospheric modelling, who will focus on improving estimates of Australian emissions of the powerful greenhouse gas, methane. Collaborating with a range of partners within the UK and Australia, you will be working at the forefront of methane monitoring techniques, with access to state-of-the-art atmospheric models and new satellite-based observations. You will be part of a new collaboration between UK and Australian scientists as part of the EO4CH4 project and will contribute to improving estimates of agricultural emissions of methane, which are still poorly understood at a time when the Global Methane Pledge requires that anthropogenic emissions of methane must be reduced by 2030. You will investigate the complex relationships between agriculture-related emissions of different chemical species. Your research will contribute to the range of greenhouse gas-related monitoring work which will inform future climate-based policy decisions.

In this role, you will join an experienced and productive team within the department with a long track record of producing high-impact research relating to the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere. You will have a PhD in a related discipline, with experience of using atmospheric models in tandem with empirical data relating to atmospheric species such as methane. You will have a track record of publishing your research and the ability to work as part of a dynamic research group. This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute significantly to improvements in our ability to monitor of impact on the Earth’s climate and to inform future policy decisions to reduce that impact.
