Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Central University School of Law was founded in 1939 to provide opportunities for African American students to become lawyers. The mission is to provide a quality, personalized, practice-oriented, and affordable legal education to historically underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds to increase diversity in the legal profession.The School of Law empowers graduates to become highly competent and socially responsible lawyers and leaders committed to public service and to meeting the needs of under-served communities.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Dean of Administration, External Affairs and Counsel to the Dean will be responsible for advising the Dean on priorities in all operational areas. The Associate Dean reports to the Dean, is a member of the law school’s leadership team, and must develop a collegial relationship with law school and University partners to fully represent the law school’s interests. In coordination with the Dean, the Associate Dean is responsible for the daily operational management of the School of Law, includes compliance, IT, communications and marketing, development, finance, human resources, and facilities. The Associate Dean will also work closely with the Dean on leadership and management matters, and the Dean will deputize the Associate Dean to handle matters as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of business, finance, and human resources principles and practices, preferably in a university setting. Grant management experience preferred. Strong financial, communication, analytical, and problem solving skills.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree or Juris Doctor Degree required. Minimum 3-5 years professional experience ideally with some experience in a law school or legal setting.
A leader with strong experience in developing management strategies and effectively implementing polices and/or programs across multiple disciplines or organizations.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Excellent interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with partners, individuals and/or teams across various disciplines.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Will serve as a liaison between University Counsel and the law school to obtain and provide legal guidance as it relates to the institution and other upper management legal and policy matters relevant to the university.
Participating in the development of strategic direction for the School of Law within the context of the University’s planning framework and overarching strategies.
Serving on and contributing to law school and University-wide committees as assigned.
Representing the School of Law in University-wide teaching and learning initiatives, policies, submissions, and awards.
