The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department is seeking a qualified and passionate candidate to work closely with the Director of Sport Science providing applied sport science services to all OU student athletes as the Assistant Director of Sport Science.

Essential Duties

  • Serve as the primary sport scientist for specific teams with an emphasis on Football and Recovery (designated by the Director of Sport Science)
  • Develop effective sport-specific educational presentations and handout materials for student athletes with emphasis on recovery
  • Maintain ongoing communications with coaching staff, strength & conditioning staff, athletic trainers, team physicians, mental health staff, and administration regarding performance science and research/development
  • Assist with individual and team game day operations related to preparation assessments (e.g., kinetic, and kinematic analysis, workload, and preparedness monitoring) and recovery strategies
  • Assess and analyze preparation and recovery practices, including needs analysis, physiological and biomechanical assessments, and customized recovery protocols
  • Assist research, analysis and translation of scientific inquiry and research studies sport science initiatives
  • Potential travel with various teams possible
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Sport Science or coaching staffs

 

 

Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology, Neuroscience, Data Analytics or related field from an accredited college or university, AND: 

  • 24 months of experience working with an NCAA institution or professional sports team, and athlete load monitoring in an applied sports setting.

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of experience.

Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of performance science practices
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week, including breaks, holidays, and weekends.
  • Capability of delegating tasks/duties effectively and efficiently to department members
  • Effective communication, presentation, and counseling skills
  • Knowledge of monitoring and recovery tools, technologies, and methodologies
  • Knowledge of data management, analysis, and data visualization
  • Competent in coding language (preferably R), data analysis (R, SAS, SPSS, JASP, etc.)
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies (NCAA)

Certifications: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) certification.

Working Conditions: 

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Regular pressure to meet productivity standards
  • Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods  
  • Potential travel with various teams possible

Physical: Ability to engage in repetitive motions and communicate effectively.

Environmental: Exposure to temperature changes. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions including in the heat and cold.

Supervision: Multiple student workers and graduate assistant

Departmental Preferences: 

  • Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, Neuroscience, Data Analytics or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience working with athletes; experience in a collegiate setting
  • Familiarity and compliance with NCAA Bylaws, HIPAA, and FERPA
  • Certifications:  CPR, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, AED, AFAA, NASM, CPT, PT, CES
