Position Description
The role of the Biostatistician involves working within a fast-paced interdisciplinary team on the statistical analysis of student-driven clinical investigations with direct and frequent interfacing with the Senior Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and the faculty directors of all our PGME Master’s degrees.

Preparation and review reports/audits on student progress toward completion of thesis manuscripts, including but not limited to:
  1. Drafting a written review of each graduating student’s dissertation prior to defense;
  2. Reviewing proposed statistical protocol and study methodology to ensure conformance with intensive graduate-level training and high-impact research;
  3. Directing students in data acquisition process from external institutions and staying current with training requirements related to human subjects research and data security.
 
Serve as the primary analytics supervisor to 30+ students with support that includes directing the study design, analysis plan, timeline and statistical reporting of students thesis projects. Supervise masters-level biostatisticians who also support students’ analytical needs. Liaise with clinician mentors of graduate students on drafting manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications documenting statistical results from studies. Oversee the development of efficient policies to ensure successful student outcomes, while proactively identifying potential or actual administrative or scientific problems in research; advise collaborators and other staff on appropriate solutions. Foster a culture of community, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging among staff and learners.  Maintain department-wide professional expertise in established and emerging clinical investigation and biomedical research protocols. This individual would be teaching and helping develop educational content in our small group sessions in our Design and Analytics courses and/or support resources to the PGME certificate programs and other Office of External Education (OEE) programs.

Basic Qualifications
  • Master's Degree required.
  • 5 or more years of experience preferably in an academic research setting.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • PhD preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong quantitative background with at least 10 years of experience as a primary analyst of clinical trials, national registries, surveys, and administrative claims databases using statistical software packages: SAS, STATA, and R.
  • Willingness to learn and adopt other statistical packages as needed on a case-by-case basis.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a protocol statistician managing the progress of graduate-level students in completing dissertation work.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing less-experienced analysts in the completion of their assigned responsibilities.
  • Proven track record of high-level analytical contributions to clinical and outcomes research.
  • Broad expertise in high-level biomedical quantitative analyses in advanced degree programs, including but not limited to the evaluation of clinical trials on both an individual and meta-analytic basis, modeling of hierarchical and epidemiological data, prediction methods in machine learning and data science, and causal inference.
  • Expertise in statistical methods such as causal inference, program evaluation, experimental design, Bayesian data analysis, hierarchical/multilevel modeling, predictive modeling, and machine learning.
  • Ability to take independent initiatives on projects outside the direct scope of job responsibilities.

This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position. 

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
