Position Description
Harvard Medical School (HMS) is seeking to hire a strategic-minded leader for the role of Assistant Chief Technology Officer for Architecture and Operations. The Assistant CTO will fill a critical leadership role as part of the Chief Technology Officer’s (CTO) organization, providing operational leadership and support to the IT infrastructure teams. The Assistant CTO will lead strategic and operational planning of IT infrastructure initiatives, fostering technology innovation and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems while simultaneously ensuring the efficient and robust operation of production services.

Coordinating directly with the CTO, the qualified candidate will help lead the development and implementation of technology policies, standards, processes, and procedures and put them into operational practice. As part of the Office of the CTO leadership, the Assistant CTO will work to ensure a continuous cycle of improvement, creating a unified technology architecture built on automation able to quickly realign with the constantly changing needs of the faculty and stakeholders.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and mentor diverse infrastructure teams responsible for enterprise services, network, servers, storage, architecture, and automation.
  • Provide leadership for the planning, development, implementation, and scalable rollout of technology services.
  • Establish and continuously review infrastructure goals, objectives, and operating procedures.
  • Oversee the data protection and disaster recovery aspects of business continuity.
  • Coordinate the business impact analysis process and the creation of response plans.
  • Coordinates the exercising and testing of BCDR plans, including post-incident review of recovery plans.
  • Collaborate directly with facilities planning and management to coordinate infrastructure work.
  • Leverage data gathering and analytics to drive continuous improvement of infrastructure across the technology stack.
  • Partner with different administrative offices and affiliate hospitals to provide efficient workflows for operations and support services across the IT infrastructure technology stack.
  • Partner Office of the CTO leadership to proactively engage with and respond to the changing needs of faculty and stakeholders.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct
  • Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, Engineering, related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s degree in technology management preferred
  • Proven track record in the development and implementation of innovative, strategic technology projects that support institutional goals.
  • Demonstrated experience with network and system architecture
  • Demonstrated experience establishing governance groups in a higher education environment to ensure continuous improvement of technology services.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with technology project management
  • Experience creating and implementing disaster recovery and business continuity practices.
  • Experience with data center planning and operations
  • Ability to establish a fiscally responsible technology refresh strategy.
  • Strong technology strategy experience with a deep understanding of technology in higher education.
  • Skilled in strategy development, complex project management, and identifying and executing solutions.
  • Solid business acumen; ability to synthesize and analyze information for actionable strategic directions.
  • Effective personnel mentorship and leadership skills and experience with developing strong leaders and proficient and diverse staff.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of 15 or more technical staff.

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA).
