As a member of the Network Architecture team, the Senior Network Engineer works closely with the Network Operations Supervisor/Team. The role will lead efforts to architect and design mission-critical and scalable network infrastructure, redesign existing solutions to be more efficient, and guides the rollout of new functions and features in a non-disruptive manner. The Senior Network Engineer performs expert-level network architecture and design, configuration, and maintenance across systems while providing skilled technical and project leadership on the Network Operations team. He/she/they implement IT solutions to complex business problems and may manage and be a key contributor to multiple projects simultaneously. The incumbent provides adept knowledge (and hands-on experience) of complex networking systems at every level including in-depth knowledge in at least one of the networking technologies such as campus switching and routing, data center networking, 802.11 wireless, firewall, software-defined network, multi-cloud networking (Azure, AWS), and Network Access Control, scripting, etc. The ideal candidate is passionate about building great things, is both innovative and methodical, and is team focused. The position provides great customer experience to our research community, students, faculty, and staff.


Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Architect and design mission-critical and scalable network infrastructure
  • Review existing network designs and help identify areas to continue to build upon or improve
  • Help troubleshoot network issues in any manifestation and document resolution
  • Provide advanced/expert-level support to Network Operations to resolve incidents
  • Prepare and maintain network diagrams, technical specifications, and system documentation
  • Work to establish design principles and standards for all network components and configurations
  • Assist in the evaluation of vendor proposals with respect to the hardware, communications protocols, switching, and in the procurement of software and equipment
  • Assist in the design and implementation of LAN/WAN using switch and router technology (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, MPLS traffic engineering, etc.) 
  • Monitor services with log aggregations, automated analysis, reporting, and alerting in support of incident detection and response
  • Plan, Stage, Test and verify all changes to ensure changes occur without interruption
  • Rack, stack and configure network hardware where needed
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation
  • Ensure adherence to IT standards and service level objectives
  • Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient use of IT resources
  • Support and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison and mentor junior staff 
  • Contribute to establishment of best practices 
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Working Conditions
  • Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours, and may be called during off hours
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of configuration and design of IT infrastructure systems within an enterprise environment
  • Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
