Job Description

Position Description
The del Mármol lab at Harvard Medical School is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our research group to conduct structural and functional studies of mosquito olfactory receptors involved in detecting human odors. Our lab studies the structural and molecular mechanisms underlying the sense of smell in mosquitoes and other insects, using cryoEM, biochemistry, and functional assays.

For more information about the lab and its research: delmarmol.hms.harvard.edu.

As a successful candidate, you will work closely with Dr. del Mármol and will receive extensive training in experimental techniques, data analysis, communication of results, and lab operations. Techniques you will encounter include cell-based functional assays to study the activity of odorant receptors, mammalian and insect cell culture, baculovirus generation, and standard molecular biology methodology such as DNA extraction/purification, PCR, and site-directed mutagenesis. You will actively contribute to research projects, including the design and analysis of experiments, stay up to date on literature relevant to research areas, and present data in laboratory meetings. In addition to supporting researchers in the lab with their science, you will help maintain laboratory stocks and supplies, and assist with lab operations and other duties as might arise.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform and analyze cell-based functional assays to study the activity of odorant receptors.
  • Maintain mammalian and insect cell lines, generate baculovirus, and carry viral transduction of mammalian cells to produce cell pellets.
  • Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction/purification, PCR, cloning (Gibson assembly), and site-directed mutagenesis.
  • Actively contribute to research projects, including design and analysis of experiments, staying current on literature relevant to research areas, and presentation of data in laboratory meetings.
  • Manage general lab operations including maintaining laboratory stocks, ordering supplies, buffer preparation, and compliance with lab safety.
Basic Qualifications
  • College degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or a related discipline.
  • Previous laboratory-related work experience (relevant coursework may count towards experience).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, and Neuroscience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and protein chemistry is advantageous.
  • Experience with the following techniques is highly desirable: recombinant DNA techniques (PCR, cloning, mutagenesis), mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques, baculovirus production, SDS- PAGE, Western blot, ELISA.
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
