Job Summary
Assistant Director for Online Instructional Design is to help AU online design and launch a series of online graduate programs. Under the supervision of the Director of Instructional Design, the position will guide and support the development of innovative online programs and courses through direct consultation with individual faculty and faculty groups regarding online course design, media, online course technologies and quality assurance. They will work across various programs and disciplines. They play an active role in decisions related to media and technology within the online courses, ensuring that experiences meet the specifications of the degree program and adhere to institutional expectations for rigor, quality, and scalability.
The Assistant Director will specialize in the following two areas: media and managing the needed online course technologies for online courses designed. This position will be expected to do a significant amount of work within the LMS in the AUO courses to provide the needed support for delivery. The Assistant Director will have no responsibility for the oversight and functioning of the LMS.

Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to: Develop instructional materials:
Collaborate with and guide faculty in creative and effective best practice use of media and online learning course technologies. Provide recommendations and guidance to faculty on learning technologies. They will help faculty take advantage of available campus technologies, assist faculty members with the development of media materials to be incorporated into online courses and assist faculty in using media, software and educational technologies to enhance their instruction. Some of the specific responsibilities will be to:
  • Source/create dynamic content to ensure learners remain engaged and courses see minimal attrition
  • Conduct detailed needs assessments with faculty to determine learning needs and partners with SMEs to develop media for online courses
  • Work closely within teams to develop facilitator guides, PowerPoints, online resources, websites, and handouts for all training delivery channels
  • Research, design, and develop relevant, engaging, effective and highly creative media that incorporate instructional design best practices and push the boundaries of available technologies to deliver the best possible solution
  • Make informed recommendations on changes and adjustments to learning experiences using performance data, and instructor/student feedback as required
Manage AUO course level needs within the LMS
Will consult primarily with faculty & guide the development and revision of courses or learning modules independently. They will ensure that all projects meet quality standards established by the university & ensure compliance with all relevant regulations including FERPA, ADA guidelines, campus security, & copyright law. Specific decisions/activities will involve:
  • Determining the correct look, feel and experience of the learner when they access the university's LMS which will require the ability to access and change all AUO courses to the same extent that a faculty are able to adjust and adapt courses in the LMS
  • Load all relevant digital materials including digital textbook or textbook resources to the LMS
  • Generate detailed course reports showing usage by all participants in the course including faculty, staff and students
  • Manage video libraries (ie., Echo 360) to drop video content into all AUO courses
  • Manage course evaluation deployments and data collection
  • Manage Respondus lockdown browser for any quizzes, tests or assessments to support faculty in the delivery of courses
  • Fix links to any services provided by a URL
  • Roll over from a course shell (non-production) to a live D2L (LMS) environment
  • Change the role of any AU instructor into an AUO instructor for a given course or program
Faculty professional development, training and consultations
Guide the development and implementation of professional development (both pedagogical and technical) in a variety of modalities and formats aimed at assisting faculty members as they develop engaging and interactive, engaging online programs and courses; consult with faculty members as they incorporate educational technology into the development of learning experiences; coordinate curriculum and course design projects for online programs. Ongoing professional growth
Mentor other AU Online staff members in their job roles, professional growth and development; update and improve one's own knowledge, skills and attitudes pertaining to the instructional design and quality process, faculty development, new models of instruction, emerging technologies and related fields. Optionally, present or publish scholarship related to educational technology, instructional design, higher education, and teaching and learning. General responsibilities
Perform related duties as assigned to support the mission of the University.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Master's degree in instructional design, educational technology or a related field from an accredited institution

Required Experience
2 or more years working as a team member working in a higher education setting utilizing online technologies and media to improve learning outcomes.
Experience with online/blended course development and integration of educational technology in the learning environment.
Some experience with instructional design.

Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, instruction.
Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education.
Demonstrated success working with faculty members or other instructional staff to improve teaching and learning and in their use of learning management systems.
Experience using learning management systems, visual presentation software, online collaboration tools, and web authoring tools to create online learning environments;
Ability to apply learning-design strategies that support student outcomes;
Experience developing and facilitating professional development opportunities to faculty members.
Direct Experience with D2L and Kaltura

Preferred Educational Qualifications
5 years experience in educational technology educational media, instructional systems designer a related field

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

Pay Grade: 22

Salary: Minimum $64,553.00/Annually - $87,147.00/Annually
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
