Job Description

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have a background in antimicrobial polymers, fibre manufacture, or biomaterials?  Do you want to further your career at the interface of textile fibres and healthcare in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? 

This project is funded by Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LiTaC) and involves the development of a new antimicrobial fibre concept to control pathogen transmission and the risks of infections, e.g. in healthcare settings.

Working in a multi-disciplinary team, you will investigate the design of a new fibrous material capable to generate antimicrobial polymer on-demand through the use of visible light. Leveraging the research that has already been carried out within the team, you will work with researchers and market analysts to develop a product design concept that is scalable, cost-effective and regulatory friendly. You will study the polymer dimension, fibre manufacturability, and antimicrobial functionality to inform the proof of principle technical work and identify commercially scalable product applications. The project is led by the Textile Technology Research Group in the School of Design (Dr Giuseppe Tronci), and will be underpinned by multi-disciplinary collaborations in the field of healthcare, microbiology and polymer science.

With a PhD (or with a thesis soon to be submitted for evaluation) related to biomaterials, degradable polymers or fibre manufacture, you will have research experience in antimicrobial chemistry and polymer fibre-based materials. You will have proven ability to work effectively as part of a collaborative team and independently. 

As a successful applicant, you will join the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC), a collaborative, multi-disciplinary research institute addressing global challenges in colour, fashion and textiles through research and innovation, as well as teaching. We are particularly focused on the development of innovative science and technology, materials, methods and processes. Technology-driven sustainable development is a major part of our work, hosted by the School of Design at the University of Leeds. The School of Design is a world leading research centre with a focus in creativity and developing innovative materials and manufacturing solutions with interdisciplinary researchers and industrial partners. You will join an experienced, innovative and diverse team and will be actively involved in research, producing high quality publications and contributing to the School’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).
