Job Description

Operate Ball State University shuttle buses as assigned and assist the supervisor with coordination of assignments and direction of work.

The Ball State University Facilities department has a full time opportunity for a Bus Driver Group Leader. This position offers excellent compensation and a generous benefits package that includes health insurance, paid time off, and retirement.  This is a second shift position. A second shift premium of .25 cents/hour will be added to the base wage.

Job Function:

Operate Ball State University shuttle buses as assigned and assist the supervisor with coordination of assignments and direction of work.

Minimum Education:

1.High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

Preferred Education:

1. Post high school education/training.


Minimum Experience:

1.Over one (1) through (3) years verified professional driving experience.
2.Must demonstrate ability to drive bus (on-site driving test).
3.Must possess and maintain a valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with an endorsement for public passengers and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.
4.Must possess a good driving record; verification through Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
5.Must pass a post offer/pre-employment mandatory drug and alcohol test.
6.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.
7.You must be 21 years or older.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the direction of work for bus drivers and act for the supervisor when assigned.
  • Assist in training new drivers and establishing routes and schedules.
  • Operate passenger shuttle buses, and paratransit units on various routes as established by the Transportation Office.
  • Inspect buses and report any equipment malfunctions; maintain cleanliness of vehicles.
  • Fuel daily and inspect bus for any exterior damage.
  • Maintain contact with Transportation Office when necessary via radio and/or telephone; inform office of changes in location, delays, traffic problems, emergencies, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage and number of passengers; complete various trip sheets and logs for each assigned task.
  • Assist and direct disabled individuals on and off vehicles as needed.
  • Report any problems with routes and make recommendations for changes when appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
