Job Description

The Neutron and X-ray Scattering group of the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in the area of experimental condensed matter physics.

Research projects will utilize single crystal diffuse neutron and x-ray scattering and inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the impact of local disorder and short-range correlations on emerging properties of interest. This position will focus on investigating the coupling of short-range lattice correlations and fluctuations to electronic properties in systems with metal-insulator transitions or near quantum phase transitions. The candidate will also participate in other projects to study the influence of spin, charge, and lattice correlations on a range of properties of interest, such as ionic correlations and conductivity, frustrated magnetism, and relaxor behavior.

Position Requirements

  • Primary major in condensed matter physics or similar area with experience in neutron and/or x-ray scattering methods is required

  • Experience in performing single crystal diffuse scattering experiments and analyzing such data via 3D-PDF, real-space simulations, or other methods are strongly preferred

  • Experience in determination of local distortions and short-range correlations in crystalline materials is highly desired

  • A strong experimental background and theoretical understanding in the area of strongly correlated electron system and related topics and strong experimental and theoretical background in crystallography, determination of structural correlations in single crystals, and single crystal scattering techniques are preferred

  • Experience in analyzing large data sets in general, and in particular from modern time-of-flight neutron scattering instruments, and experience in utilizing and developing python scripts for analyzing data are highly desired

  • The candidate is expected to think and work independently and conduct research in a highly interdisciplinary environment of physicists, materials scientists, and computational scientists

  • Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

This position will involve a considerable number of experiments performed mainly at national neutron and synchrotron x-ray facilities, in particular the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the NIST Center for Neutron Research, and the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, with occasional measurements at facilities abroad and in-house physical properties measurements.
