What Your Job Will Be Like: Are you passionate about using computational methods to understand relationships between atomic structure, material properties and dynamic response, or to develop new materials starting from fundamental physics? Our team is seeking hardworking postdoctoral appointees with a strong interest in Atomistic Materials Modeling. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan, conduct, and analyze computer simulations of materials behavior at the atomistic scale to deduce materials structure, properties, and performance + Work in conjunction with experimentalists to devise novel atomistic simulation models, tools, and approaches for creative solutions to materials science challenges + Synthesize materials knowledge to develop and carry out research to understand material properties + Use simulations and computational tools to analyze, interpret and predict signatures of atomic deformation from experimental imaging + Work in team environments on multidisciplinary, technically challenging projects as part of a dynamic research organization + Collaborate with specialists in other fields to couple atomistic simulation methods with other models to understand multi-scale, multi-physics phenomena + Communicate accomplishments in presentations at conferences, and publish work in peer-reviewed journals Qualifications We Require: + Possess, or be pursuing, a PhD. in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field and have a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) + Experience in designing, performing, and analyzing large-scale atomistic simulations with engineering relevance + Experience developing and modifying simulation tools in C, C++, python, perl or other modern programming languages + A proven track record of disseminating original research through peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations at professional conferences + The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Molecular dynamics simulation experience in one, or more, of the following areas: metals deformation, atomic/molecular diffusion and adsorption, polymer dynamics, metallic glass formation, fracture of brittle materials, high-rate dynamic or shock compression, computational x-ray diffraction, and/or interfacially-dominated processes including tribology + Experience with applying machine learning techniques to materials simulations + Track record of collaborating with experimentalists and other modelers to design advanced materials for engineering applications + Experience in modeling the behavior and response of a wide variety of materials including materials of interest to the Department of Energy + Effective interpersonal skills with demonstrated experience building effective relationships and crafting creative solutions in a team environment, including collaborations with industry, academia, and/or research laboratories + Strong verbal and technical writing skills About Our Team: The Computational Materials and Data Science Department provides advanced computational analysis to deliver insight and solutions to engineering materials issues. Capabilities include model development at the nanoscale and mesoscale to understand materials structure, properties and performance, interfacial dynamics, defect initiation and propagation, multivariate analysis, and signal processing. We work closely with experimental colleagues to validate our computational work. Our multidisciplinary background and materials science expertise is sought out to understand the mechanistic and physical bases of the aging and wear of materials including metals, ceramics, semiconductors, biomaterials, and polymers in support of DOE nuclear and non-nuclear missions.
