Job Description
We are seeking to hire the inaugural Director of the Cleveland Clinic Genome Center. This new Center will serve as a multi-institutional hub for collaborative genomic research and will leverage strengths in technology development, computational biology, and high throughput sequencing. The mission of the Center is to advance genomic science and its application to novel biomedical discoveries, leading to cutting-edge research and subsequent practice of genomic medicine. The focus will be broad, from the development of computational and experimental genomic methods to disease-focused research to advance the understanding of the genetic basis of diseases encompassed within four impact areas (cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological and ophthalmic disease, and inflammation). The Genome Center will also include a new Genome Technology Innovation Lab/Center, which will act as a creative hub and dedicated incubator for the development and early-stage evaluation of new genomics tools and methodologies, with potential strategic industry partnerships.
The new Director will strategically create, develop and lead the Genome Center. This is a central and critical role for Cleveland Clinic globally and in the Cleveland Innovation District. The Director will supervise a diverse, interdisciplinary team of doctoral-level genome scientists and engineers and will closely collaborate with researchers and physicians across the Cleveland Clinic enterprise. This individual will also have an opportunity to integrate his/her/their independent research program into the Genomic Medicine Institute, an academic department in the Lerner Research Institute dedicated to applied genomic research. Further, this leadership role will also interact with Cleveland Clinic Innovations and Communications. The Center will be located in state-of-the-art research space in the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. Rank will be commensurate with experience. The Director will report to the Chair of the Lerner Research Institute in the capacity of Genome Center Director and to the Chair of the Genomic Medicine Institute from an academic standpoint
Applicants should be an established or rising star in the field of genomics and have a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in genomics, genetics, molecular biology, engineering, bioinformatics or similar discipline with extensive (10+ years) post-doctoral experience in a relevant field. The successful candidate will have a strong interdisciplinary scientific background with a track record of research excellence in molecular biology and biochemistry emphasizing technology and engineering; demonstrated fiscal management ability, prior success in building teams, fostering partnerships and launching new ventures.

The Global Center will reside in 400,000 square feet of newly constructed research space housing state of the art laboratories and technologies. Cleveland Clinic's global footprint provides a large, growing, and diverse patient population giving our research teams' access to tens of thousands of unique biological samples through the centralized Cleveland Clinic Bio-Repository. Furthermore, the newly established partnership with IBM will leverage high- performance computing using hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing technologies to empower and accelerate big data research. The newly established Center for Therapeutic Discovery provides a full scale drug discovery effort to identify new drug targets and therapeutic compounds. All these efforts will ultimately coordinate with Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the technology commercialization and corporate venturing group serving to transform our discoveries into clinical practice.
