The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Relations inspires innovation and provides a critical role in supporting and providing managerial oversight for academic programs, faculty development, and ensuring positive student relations in the college.  The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with CCIM units and may serve as acting Dean in the Dean’s absence.  The Associate Dean contributes directly to the academic success and effectiveness of the CCIM, its faculty and students. Service in this position will contribute to the development of leaders for the College and University.   Term of appointment is three-five years negotiable, renewable.

As Dean of Ball State University’s College of Communication, Information, and Media (CCIM), I am looking to hire an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Relations.  The individual in this position will inspire innovation and provide a critical role in supporting and providing managerial oversight for academic programs, faculty development, and ensuring positive student relations in the college.  The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with CCIM units and may serve as acting Dean in the Dean’s absence.  The Associate Dean contributes directly to the academic success and effectiveness of CCIM, its faculty and students. Service in this position will contribute to the development of leaders for the College and University at a time of innovation and growth in the college including: 

·        CCIM’s  launch of the BSU Esports program, which includes the Esports Production concentration and the official Ball State varsity esports team, all housed within the state-of-the-art Esports Center https://blogs.bsu.edu/ccim/2021/04/15/ball-state-university-opens-state-of-the-art-esports-center/ 

·        The inclusion of Computer Information and Technology as part of the top ranked Center for Information and Communication Sciences. 

·        Curriculum updates so that students can learn to fly drones, manage media technology, and engage in intergroup dialogue to bring people together. 

·        A reformulated Ball State Public Media that now resides in CCIM and the addition of a new Assistant Dean of Media and General Manager of BSU Public Media.  The program and our numerous student media and clubs ensure a meaningful educational experience through unparalleled immersive learning opportunities.

·        The Department of Journalism has been renamed the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication. Consistent with an ever-changing, dynamic media landscape, the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication gives students an opportunity to learn every side of the media business while also providing them high-demand skillsets for employers across the marketplace.

·        The Department of Telecommunications has been renamed the Department of Media. Students in the Department of Media are empowered to craft compelling stories by taking advantage of best-in-class facilities, which are available immediately in their education career. In those facilities, students learn to investigate, research, and study issues related to new forms of digital media.

·        A multi-figure gift from a major corporate partner including educational collaborations, equipment, scholarships and a new Director of Strategic Partnerships (details forthcoming in December, 2021).

Job Function:

Minimum Education:

Terminal degree from an accredited institution or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

Terminal degree in relevant discipline  from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience:

Eligible for appointment or holding rank of Associate Professor with Tenure 
5 years of progressive administrative experience in higher education or other leadership roles.

Preferred Experience:

Eligible for appointment or holding rank of Professor with Tenure 
Experience in curriculum development/review, faculty development, and student advising and relations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with CCIM units and may serve as acting Dean in the Dean’s absence.
  • Facilitate activities related to the College’s academic programs including providing oversight to unit reviews, serve as ex-officio member of the curriculum committee, and consult with units on curriculum innovations.
  • Support the College and units in the promotion process for tenured, tenure-track and contract faculty. The Associate Dean is responsible for facilitating the process within the Dean’s office and serving as an ad-hoc member on the College Promotion and Tenure Committee.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate initiatives to promote and enhance faculty development, scholarship and retention.
  • Assist the Dean with CCIM strategic planning, implementation and evaluation. Shepherd innovation initiatives across the college. Coordinate strategic plan updates across units and work with the dean on submission to central administration.
  • Provide leadership on various university and college level committees and departments related to faculty affairs and student relations including, but not limited to CCIM Promotion and Tenure Committee, relevant CCIM Taskforces and others as directed.
  • Facilitate student grievance process within CCIM. Work with unit/college leadership, faculty and students to resolve issues fairly and in a timely manner.
  • Process course withdrawals, grade changes, and exceptions to the commencement policy; addresses student complaints, concerns, and appeals; serve as the College's liaison to the Office of Student Advising.
  • Review and approve various university forms related to faculty affairs and student relations as the Dean's designate including but not limited to: grade changes, course withdrawal forms for last course withdrawal period, field trip notices, graduate assistantships, continuing education forms, bus requisitions, computing services request forms, disclosure statements, work request forms, field study forms, and travel requests.
  • Oversee College elections and appointments for university governance; maintain a statistical database for the College; provide the Dean with background data/information as needed.
  • Coordinate CCIM graduate student assignments and activities; encourage/support grant and research activity; promote a sense of community among faculty and staff.
  • Teach one 3-credit course per year and continue scholarship at levels appropriate to administrative appointment.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
