Responsibilities

This position provides executive level support for the Office of the General Counsel. Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Affairs Coordinator is a liaison for the office to the rest of the campus, is responsible for coordinating the work of the General Counsel Office, including meeting with campus representatives, organizing and prioritizing legal projects, overseeing subpoena responses and discovery matters and coordinating and assisting with policy review and updates.

The duties of this position may include but are not limited to the following:

• Support the General Counsel and the College by drafting and editing various contracts, policies, letters and other documents, and assisting in research using office resources as well as web based resources. Independently prepare, and assist in the drafting and review of, documents, policies and memos. Meet with campus constituencies to understand legal needs and take in special project requests. Work with the General Counsel in policy evaluation and support policy updating and review for consistency with current legal and regulatory standards as appropriate.

• Determine need for and requisition supplies, equipment, and repair and maintenance services through College channels. May take or transcribe minutes of meetings or interviews, which may be from verbal or written instructions, longhand notes, rough drafts, or other materials.

• Provide general support to the office and back-up support as may be needed in the Office of the President. Review incoming mail to the Office of General Counsel, assess next steps and inform the General Counsel of the proposed course of action. Schedule and arrange meetings and conferences and notify interested parties. Assist in the preparation of reports; prepares travel vouchers, time keeping, and other personnel records. Maintain a calendar for the office to ensure no scheduling conflicts and to inform of deadlines.

• Ability to perform under pressure during periods of high stress, ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and key personnel and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Experience and Qualifications

Education:

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree or higher.

PREFERRED: Knowledge of state and federal law and its application in higher education, paralegal certificate or equivalent, legal training.

Experience: 5-10 years law office or corporate counsel office.

Skills/Abilities:

• Must have experience and understanding of the attorney client privilege and confidentiality in general;

• have experience conducting legal research;

• have a broad knowledge of law and knowledge regarding subpoenas and procedural issues related thereto;

• be organized, accurate and detail oriented;

• be able to work independently, draft reports and compose effective correspondences;

• be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing; and be punctual.

• Strongly desired to have experience in transactional legal work;

• be familiar with contracts, nonprofit legal issues and corporate governance matters;

• be able to perform contract drafting, editing and issue spotting;

• be familiar with employment law, labor law, and have a general understanding of tenure; and

• have experience in higher education law, including familiarity with FERPA, Title IX, Clery, NCAA compliance, and Title IV.

Technical skills: Must be proficient in a Windows based environment, and the use of Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and web-based video conferencing (e.g., Zoom), and a general familiarity with web based document management systems. Must remain current with the ever changing computing and technical environment.

Licenses & Certifications:

PREFERRED: paralegal certification and notary public

Other Requirements: Hours typically Monday through Friday, consistent with College's regular office schedule.
