Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : The Geoscience Research and Applications Group (8860) has an opening for a dedicated Manager for the Geomechanics Department. If selected, you will be responsible for providing leadership and advocacy for a hardworking team of scientists, technologists, postdocs, contractors, and student interns. This multi-disciplinary group has a wide range of backgrounds including theoretical, field, and laboratory geomechanics, geology, computational science, machine learning, additive manufacture of synthetic rocks, and related engineering. This is an outstanding opportunity for a creative and innovative research leader to advance one of the nation's leading geomechanics test capabilities, manage extensive field experimentation, and cultivate research supporting all of Sandia National Laboratories missions. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Act as a highly motivated, team-focused manager to coordinate current activities, undertake professional development of staff, and foster a safe, secure, creative and productive work environment for staff; + Engage and partner with a diverse customer base including other organizations across Sandia, DOE, DoD, and the petroleum and mining industries, as well as work with staff and management to improve these program areas and respond to their needs, policies, and requirements; + Oversee and lead the stand-alone Geomechanics lab building, five laboratories located in another building, field testing in remote locations, as well as staff working in laboratories owned and led by other Sandia organizations; + Engage with program leadership to be assigned roles based on the combination of interest and capability of the successful candidate. These could likely include engagement with the DOE Office of Science Basic Energy Science Geoscience Subprogram area, fossil energy, various elements of nuclear waste management, and non-proliferation.

+ Bachelor's and advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant STEM field plus at least eight years of related technical experience; OR Bachelor’s degree plus twelve years' related experience; + Experience working with external and internal customers, including the ability to build effective working relationships and deliver results as evidenced in previous work history; + Demonstrated ability to effectively build multidisciplinary teams and guide and mentor staff as evidenced in previous work history; + Experience working with sensitive information and classified matter; + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

+ Advanced degree in Geomechanics, Structural Geology, or related field; + At least two years of experience in management or project management coordinating multiple team-based programs and projects; + Experience managing laboratory field geomechanics testing and/or geomechanical modeling and simulations; + Experience building technical programs, including successfully engaging with demanding sponsors + Experience developing and mentoring diverse staff + Experience being responsible for and fostering safe and secure operations + Ability to travel up twice a month; + Active DOE Q-level security clearance

Department Description:

The Geomechanics Department addresses cross-cutting issues in the geosciences and geoengineering related to rock mass characterization, rock mass mechanics, development of numerical codes and numerical simulations, validation of material models and design procedures, and rock mass site monitoring. Supported by combinations of laboratory work and in situ observations, the Geomechanics Department emphasizes: characterization of natural fracture systems; identification and modeling of rock deformation and failure processes; laboratory determinations of thermomechanical and transport properties of competent rock and natural fractures, including studies of coupled effects; extrapolation of laboratory measurements to field conditions; in situ stress measurements and evaluation of in situ boundary conditions; and laboratory and bench-scale validation studies.
