General Chemistry I (Chem 008) covers the fundamental chemical principles and the chemistry of the more common elements and their compounds. The learning goals for the course are to build an understanding of fundamental principles of chemistry and their applications, develop general approaches to problem-solving which can be applied to a broad spectrum of problems, including proficiency in unit conversion and an understanding of the significance of numerical values, and to develop the student's critical thinking skills. Topics include basic structure of atoms and molecules, periodic properties, bonding, chemical reactivity and stoichiometry, properties of gases, and thermochemistry.

This course will meet in a hybrid format with some in-person instruction on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:15 - 10:20 am and Tuesday from 9:45 - 10:50 am during the 2020 fall term.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant area of chemistry and should have a successful record of teaching experience in chemistry at the undergraduate level and familiarity/experience with online/hybrid instruction.
