The University of Utah invites applications for two positions in Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion. While these positions will be in different offices, they will work together closely. The Deputy Chief Diversity Officer will report directly to the Vice President for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion, and will focus on building and fostering cultural practices that improve faculty hiring and retention. The Assistant Vice President for Faculty Equity & Diversity will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Faculty, and will focus on practices and policies related to faculty. For both positions, the salary is commensurate with experience, and the start date is July 1, 2020. Both external and internal candidates will be considered. Professors preferred, but advanced Associate Professors will be considered.

Assistant Vice President for Faculty Equity and Diversity

The Assistant Vice President for Faculty Equity & Diversity will participate in campus-wide efforts to increase the diversity of the faculty, as well as to strengthen equity and inclusion for all faculty members. Drawing on evidence- and research-based approaches, they will work with departments and colleges to ensure attention to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the hiring process, starting with hiring plans and recruitment and continuing through campus visits and onboarding. They will also engage equity, diversity, and inclusion in relation to university regulations, policies, and guidelines related to faculty. In addition, the AVP for Faculty Equity & Diversity will mentor and support faculty from underrepresented populations and/or who work in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion—including in the context of retention, promotion, and tenure (RPT) and faculty reviews, as well as in other aspects of professional life. In collaboration with the Deputy Chief Diversity Officer (DCDO), the AVP for Faculty Equity & Diversity will develop and organize a leadership development program.

The AVP for Faculty Equity & Diversity will be a key member of the Office for Faculty team, and will participate in many of the projects and activities overseen by that Office. Projects may include, but are not limited to: the Office for Faculty Program for Faculty & Administrator Support & Training; the Career-line hiring, appointment, and review process for main campus; consults with faculty regarding Personal Statements, CVs, Letters of Expectation, MOUs, and Letters of Reprimand; and Office for Faculty representation on various University and Senate Committees. This position will have opportunities to work with relevant administrators not only in the Office for Faculty and Academic Affairs, but also across the University on OneU projects related to the University’s core value of promoting diversity and equal opportunity. In particular, in addition to collaborating with the DCDO, the AVP for Faculty Equity & Diversity will work often with the Office for Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion team; the Associate Vice President for Health Equity & Inclusion; and the Dean of the Graduate School.

Key characteristics of the AVP for Faculty Equity & Diversity include:
• Experience working on equity, diversity, and inclusion issues
• Experience working with faculty, with an understanding of faculty ranks and categories
• Experience designing and providing support and education programs, preferably for faculty
• Comfort working with University policy, and attention to detail
• Ability to work collaboratively and to build consensus with a wide variety of constituents
• Strength in creative problem solving when faced with complex and nuanced situations
• Understanding of faculty work styles, department dynamics, and academic values
• Ability to keep sensitive information confidential
• Research portfolio, which (preferably but not necessarily) will include work on equity, diversity, and inclusion

Minimum Qualifications: Tenured Associate Professor or Professor. Professor preferred. External candidates will be considered for tenure in an appropriate department.
