Internal Title:  Senior Programmer /Analyst

External Title:  Senior C/C++ Programmer


The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory (BRL),, resides within the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, and participates in several national and international genomic, transcriptomic, and precision medicine projects. As members of ClinGen,, BRL is developing resources for understanding the clinical relevance of genes and variants for applications in precision medicine. BRL also leads data coordination and resource development for the Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium (ERCC),, an NIH consortium focused on exRNA carrier identification and characterization, understanding the role of extracellular RNA and exosomes, and their potential use as biomarkers. We therefore have several exciting opportunities available in the ClinGen Resource and the ERCC.


The ClinGen Allele Registry (CAR, is a web service providing globally unique canonical variant identifiers on demand via a user-friendly web interface (UI), as well as via an application programming interface (API). The backend of CAR is implemented in C/C++ and employs a proprietary database. Key responsibilities of the programmer are: to contribute components to the CAR service, to improve and extend existing software infrastructure, to update CAR reference content, and to add significant new capabilities to CAR and other highly visible projects. The candidate will also be responsible for setting, prioritizing and evaluating requests related to the CAR application and attend web conference calls to gather requirements for CAR from external collaborators, users and stakeholders in the ClinGen consortium.

Job Purpose

Performs feasibility studies, hardware/software evaluations, analysis of requirements, system design, programming, testing, implementation, problem solving, enhancements and required maintenance. Develops complex systems and maintain multiple application systems.

Job Duties
  • Meets with users to discuss requirements.
  • Designs, codes, tests, and debugs programs.
  • Creates necessary test data and tests programs.
  • Prepares all necessary program documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Required: Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants must have strong knowledge and experience in C/C++, including development, compilation, and deployment in a GNU/Linux environment. Additional requirements include:

• A working understanding of mutexes, threads, guards, and conditional and atomic variables.

• An ability to contribute to and use shared object-oriented code libraries.

• Functional familiarity with one or more modern 3rd generation languages such as Python, Ruby, Perl, and/or EcmaScript 5/6, as well as standard web technologies such as Ajax, CSS, HTML, REST APIs, JSON-LD.

•Experience with document, graph, and relational databases is a plus.


The successful candidate will be able to design, code, test, and debug generic software solutions with an emphasis on reusability, and which extend an existing system. Successful applicants will present and discuss requirements, specifications, backend and UI designs, create necessary test data, test software, and prepare documentation. A goal for the software created by programmers will be their application to important biological questions for publication in high impact journals. Recent articles include: Murillo et al. (Cell, 2019), Carrero et al. (Oncogene, 2019), Pawliczek et al. (Human Mutation, 2018), Onuchic et al. (Science, 2018), and Patel et al. (Genome Medicine, 2017).


The candidates should have experience with good software engineering practices, designing and developing software solutions to specifications and according to local standards and practices, and with the use of version control systems. In addition, candidates must have excellent English-language communication skills, interpersonal skills, and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers. Candidates who can contribute to system administration of in-house virtualized and non-virtualized IT assets as a minor duty will also be viewed favorably.
