Organization 5344 is seeking a motivated and energetic electrical engineer to join our electronics team! The successful candidate will be working on complex multi-disciplinary designs targeting command and control, communications, and data processing for scientific and national defense applications. As a successful candidate, you will be responsible for contributing as part of a team to complex systems that target state-of-the-art embedded platforms. Having a desire to learn and develop your own skills will be crucial and beneficial as you join a fun and motivated team to accomplish missions vital to our nation. Some travel will be required in this position.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Analyze, design, and develop radar systems, subsystems, and modules
  • Develop Concepts of Operation
  • System-level design and integration
  • Develop test and qualification plans
  • Develop models for computational analysis of systems and processes
  • Lead or support formal program reviews
  • Negotiate technical and programmatic requirements with customers
  • Deliver hardware within schedule and budgetary constraints

This position is eligible for telecommuting and the selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master of Science in Engineering (STEM) plus two or more years of relevant experience; or
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or relevant STEM field plus five or more years of relevant experience;
  • Experience with Radar System hardware, software, systems analysis, and/or scattering phenomenology
  • Strong background in the fundamentals of Radar and Digital Signal Processing
  • Experience in the use of MATLAB/Simulink and/or similar numerical computation, high-level programming languages, as well as other programming languages (C/C++, Java, Python, Fortran, VB script, etc.)
  • Familiarity with and experience in use of RF/microwave test equipment and proper measurement techniques for network analysis, spectrum analysis, noise characterization, etc.
  • or experience in taking a FPGA design to hardware and/or ASIC and utilizing the full array of debug tools (embedded and bench logic analyzer, O-scope, etc.); or experience in doing high speed electronics board design.
  • Active DOE Q or DoD TS level security clearance
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SCI Clearance, which may require a polygraph.

Qualifications We Desire:

Ideally, we would like to see your background include some of the following:

  • You possess embedded software and/or firmware development skills; as well as, familiar with the 1 or more of the following development methodologies or tools:
  • Experience in logic verification, preferably System Verilog/UVM
  • Experience with FPGA design tools (Xilinx Vivado, SynplifyPro, etc.)
  • Experience with firmware DSP implementation
  • Experience in taking a FPGA design to hardware and/or ASIC and utilizing the full array of debug tools (embedded and bench logic analyzer, O-scope, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of RTL synthesis flow for ASIC design
  • Experience in software DSP implementation
  • Experience in low-level device driver development and interfacing with hardware
  • Experience with software quality tools and processes such as linters, code documentation tools, static analyzers, dynamic analyzers, continuous integration tools, unit testing, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment, building consensus and resolving issues.
  • Willingness to work in a team-based development effort including tight integration with a hardware team
  • Good interpersonal and oral skills
  • Strong background and experience in RF and applied electromagnetics
  • Python and C/C++ software experience
  • Ability to understand mathematically complex systems, develop and analyze models, and draw concise conclusions from them
  • Experience in low-level device driver development and interfacing with hardware
  • Experience interacting with military personnel and protocol
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment that sometimes requires quick problem-solving skills

Department 5344 provides a diverse set of skills for developing tip-to-tail radar technology to a wide variety of programs across Sandia. We work in the mission systems engineering space for our surveillance and reconnaissance program office, mapping customer needs to uniquely compelling system solutions by leveraging Sandia’s expertise in various sensor technologies, computing platforms, and data analyses as well as Sandia’s external partnerships. The department focuses on exquisite platforms and applications through firmware and software.

Center 5300 provides key electronics systems deliverables to a wide variety of programs across Sandia (including nuclear weapons, space, intelligence and military systems) and also directly manages the Surveillance and Reconnaissance (S&R) Program.
