What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Asset Management, Systems, and Operations Engineering Department is seeking a highly motivated Electrical Engineer to join our team! In this role the selected applicant will support the development of lifecycle asset management plans for electrical systems, conduct design reviews, develop electrical specifications, perform electrical inspections, provide electrical construction technical guidance, and asset performance monitoring and failure analysis. This position provides support to all Sandia National Labs sites including New Mexico, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Texas.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Create, update, and implement technical system specifications for the design of low voltage and primary distribution voltage electrical systems.
  • Research and test new and innovative techniques and equipment to improve operations and save energy.
  • Conduct code compliance assessments and develop solutions for nonconformance.
  • Assess condition of existing building systems, equipment and site infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Utilize reliability-centered maintenance techniques to develop maintenance strategies to improve reliability.
  • Perform root-cause analyses to determine causes of electrical system failures.
  • Interface with maintenance electrical personnel on efforts related to low-to-medium voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Write detailed power outage procedures for project and maintenance activities.
  • Analyze and review arc flash calculations in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA-70E) and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$81,900 - $157,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in low voltage (<600VAC) building electrical power and distribution from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience working in one or more of the following:
  • A Facilities organization
  • An Engineering firm
  • A Construction industry
  • Inspection with design experience
  • Electrical power/distribution
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE L-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance requirements for low voltage system components (e.g. transformers, relays, switches, overcurrent protection devices, capacitor banks, overhead and underground distribution feeders, underground duct banks, motor control centers, main distribution panels, buss duct systems).
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards (1910 and 1926), and Life Safety Code.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Electrical Engineering degree that focuses on power and power distribution < 600VAC.
  • Basic knowledge of Facilities/Commercial/Laboratory engineering in design, construction and contracting.
  • Experience with Arc Flash Hazard calculations and software, short circuit and load flow calculations.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical systems, including the use, and interpretation, of power quality instrumentation for diagnostics of electrical power systems.
  • Demonstrated analytical and reasoning skills necessary to identify and resolve electrical risk issues with the mission in mind and assist in making recommendations to management and key customers.
  • Demonstrated experience with the coordination of power outages.
  • Able to initiate effective internal customer relationships.
  • Ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
  • Experience with NNSA, DOE or other federal government requirements.
  • Able to conduct research, investigate alternative solutions, and recommend solutions on problems affecting electrical systems.

About Our Team:

The Asset Management, Systems, and Operations Engineering Department is responsible for lifecycle asset management planning for SNL real property assets. This department is responsible for the development of maintenance strategies using Reliability-Centered Maintenance principals. We also collaborate with the FAMs and Maintenance on site-wide building infrastructure/system and programmatic infrastructure issues requiring a broader solution.
