What Your Job Will Be Like:
An R&D Laboratory Support Technologist position is open for a Metrologist in the Electrical Lab at the Sandia National Laboratories’ Primary Standards Lab. This individual will be responsible for the calibration and certification of electrical equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other measurement and test equipment for NNSA standards laboratories and Sandia line organizations. Additionally, the Metrologist is expected to develop and document new procedures, support measurement uncertainty analyses, provide training to our customers, cross-train into other disciplines in the Primary Standards Lab, and participate in surveys and audits. This position requires problem solving skills and a high technical aptitude related to metrology and calibration spanning a broad range of measurement areas, systems and equipment, methods, and procedures.
The selected individual will make measurements, operate, maintain manual and computer-controlled calibration systems. Additionally, this candidate will be expected to develop and provide recommendations to resolve calibration issues and improve calibration quality and efficiency. This position also involves generating certificates and reports, developing and maintaining computer-based and written procedures, and working with the project leader to make improvements. The work requires the use of metrology database and data acquisition software. In addition, the work is expected to be performed safely, including environment and hazardous waste.
An ideal candidate would be someone who likes to work independently but also works well with a team.
Salary Range:
$60,300 - $116,000
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- High School diploma or equivalent plus minimum 2 years of relevant experience
- Experience should include evaluating, assembling, disassembling and trouble-shooting electrical equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, RF measurement equipment, signal generators, PXI/PXIe, and digitizers
- Experience working safely in a laboratory environment around mitigated hazards while following all applicable ES&H protocols
- Computer skills commensurate with the duties listed above and including expertise in Microsoft Office suite with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel spreadsheet generation
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Associates degree from an ABET accredited program in engineering technology, or a Bachelor’s degree in other STEM field with coursework in engineering/engineering technology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience interacting with customers
- Experience working in a high-rigor, high quality lab environment in accordance with all procedures, policies, and practices
- Experience developing and documenting effective processes and procedures
- Familiarity with the ISO 17025 standard
- Experience working in positions with a heavy emphasis on attention to detail
- Experience developing and validating calibration-related methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures
- Experience interfacing personal computers with measurement and test equipment
- Experience programming computer-controlled equipment using LabView or be familiar with other programming languages such as Python, C#, or C++
- Strong interest in measurement standards activities including at least one year of working in a standards lab, preferably an ISO 17025 accredited lab
- Training and/or experience in statistics, error analysis and uncertainty calculations
- Experience using large, integrated software applications such as Maximo
- Experience and/or training in Lean Six Sigma, ISO 9001, AS9100
- Formal and on-the-job training will be available
- A participative selection process will be used
About Our Team:
Department 02942 provides calibration support of Sandia customer assets and working standards used to identify product attributes and test system calibrations; including support of customer owned assets at the customer site and support for SNL research and production organizations. Department 02942 maintains a wide variety of measurement expertise and consults on technical problems, calibrates reference standards and assists in technical oversight of the DOE/NNSA Nuclear Weapons Complex contractor standards laboratories.
