The Department of Medicine offers an outstanding opportunity for a staff research assistant to work on a translationally based project related to autoimmunity. This position is perfect for someone looking for a long-term position with the possibility for advancement or for an individual in need of laboratory experience before transitioning to graduate school. The Webb laboratory conducts government funded research using both mouse and human model systems and molecular biology approaches to understand important questions in immunology and stem cell biology. We seek an industrious and responsible individual to add to our team.

Duties:

  • Provides assistance to a research staff by collecting data, keeping records, conducting literature searches, technical research, analyzing data, and preparing reports with minimal supervision.
  • Conducts research and laboratory analysis for research staff, to include but not limited to measure and weigh compounds and solutions, isolate, identify and prepare specimens, and collect samples and other research information.
  • Participates in clinical research projects collecting data from patients and or participants in a study.
  • Collects various forms of data pertaining to the research project or projects, which could include database information and or hard files.
  • Conducts data analyses, interprets data, draws conclusions, and discusses with principal investigator.
  • Keeps detailed logs of all research related projects or activities.
  • Conducts literature searches.
  • Prepares various reports containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content that may be submitted for publication.
  • Constructs tests or assists in the construction of tests.
  • Collaborates with other researchers or colleagues.
  • Participates in meetings and presents research findings to fellow researchers and Principal Investigator.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Education:  Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, or Physical Science or related field.

Experience:  12 months research laboratory experience.

Equivalency& Substitution: Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree for a total of 60 months research experience.

Skills:

  • Working knowledge of how to safely handle and dispose of biohazardous materials or chemicals following Federal, State, and University regulations and guidelines.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to analyze data and keep records.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Reaching, bending, and stooping.
  • Environmental: Laboratory Environment. Exposure to biohazardous materials, chemicals, odors, and or carcinogens.

Departmental Preferences:

  • Tissue culture: Maintain of human cell lines and culturing of primary cells using sterile techniques
  • Flow cytometry: Stain white blood cells via immunofluorescence, sort subsets and analyze populations
  • Microscopy: cell counting and immunofluorescence<br/>Basic molecular biology techniques: nucleic acid isolation for sequencing
  • Perform other research duties, such as protocol implementation and troubleshooting
  • Data Presentation: keep a detailed laboratory notebook and summarize results for weekly lab meetings other presentations and publications
  • Lab Safety: Adheres to all required lab safety practices 
  • Ordering and administration: helps lab manager maintain and organize lab supplies
  • Discusses and analyzes data with principal investigator
  • Performs other duties as assigned to successfully fulfill the function of the position
  • Some knowledge of basic immunology and or molecular biology is preferred, along with evidence of full-time work experience.
