Job Description

The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine is pleased to invite nominations and applications for the position of Executive Dean and encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.

The College of Medicine has a 118-year history of training generations of pioneering physicians, surgeons, physician associates, scientists, scholars, and educators. Every year the Executive Dean and over 1,250 faculty proudly welcome 165 medical students, 70 physician associate students, 40 graduate students, 80 post-doctoral researchers, and 188 residents and fellows to join the Sooner tradition. The College is part of the comprehensive OU Health Sciences Center (OUHSC), including five partner health professions colleges and a graduate college, research centers of excellence such as the Stephenson Cancer Center and Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, and a recent clinical integration with the non-profit academic health system OU Health, including OU Medical Center, The Children’s Hospital, and OU Medical Center - Edmond.

The incoming Executive Dean (the Dean) will be a change agent, building upon this foundation of excellence to lead the next phase of academic and research growth and national distinction guided by the Health Sciences Center’s recently adopted Strategic Plan.  The OUHSC has set a priority goal to be a top 100 research-driven academic health center according to the Blue Ridge rankings, and to achieve this goal in the next 5 years.  The Dean will lead recruitment and retention of faculty of national prominence to achieve this goal. The Dean will be a nationally recognized scholar who, by example, will set the standards for excellence in research and scholarship, with a particular emphasis on team-based science; translational research; and collaboration with centers of excellence in oncology, diabetes, vision, geroscience, children’s healthcare, and immunology.  The Dean supports and guides the MD-PhD and similar clinical-scientist development programs and serves as a leader to significantly expand research opportunities for patients, trainees, faculty, and staff, in particular clinical trials and population health.  The Dean will also promote research on new therapeutics and technology development and commercialization across the campus, working closely with scientists and entrepreneurs, and collaborating with OU’s Norman and Tulsa campus colleagues, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, i2E, and other partner organizations.

The Dean recruits, inspires, and mentors students and trainees to pursue the professions of medicine, biomedical and clinical research, and advanced clinical practice — sharing the empathy, humanism, and inclusivity essential to success. The Dean drives curricular innovations, tailoring ideas from peer medical schools to Oklahoma’s needs and opportunities; expands joint degrees, such as with public health, business, engineering, and law; and champions interprofessional training programs attuned to a transforming healthcare system, including expanded simulation capabilities and telehealth. With over 600 residents and fellows in Oklahoma City, the Dean is a passionate advocate for the clinical learning environment and developmental pathways and milestones, including systems-based practice and effective use of the electronic medical record and health information exchanges. The Dean also has oversight for the undergraduate medical educational programs at the OU-Tulsa School of Community Medicine, which are fully incorporated in the College’s LCME accreditation, working with the Dean of the School of Community Medicine and faculty to strengthen academic connections across the College.  Through the Academy of Teaching Scholars and similar programs, the College nurtures and recognizes teaching excellence, evidence-based instruction, and scholarship in learning, and the Dean will be a leader nationally in the teaching methodologies for the twenty-first century.

The Dean works with colleagues across the enterprise to elevate the academic health center’s impact, reputation, and prestige, and explores new ways to sustain and enhance the connections between the College and OU Health in support of academic and clinical training and workforce development.  The College’s dedicated alumni, donors, and supporters look to the Dean to be visible in the community and articulate the values and optimism of academic medicine, and the far-reaching benefits of philanthropy.  In addition, the Dean works with regional, state, and national leaders on topics related to academic medicine policies and legislation.

The OU College of Medicine holds diversity as a core value of its missions and strives to enhance inclusion and cultural competency in the health care workforce. The College of Medicine is committed to recruiting and supporting a diverse student body, resident cohort, and faculty and administrative staff. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center seeks to recruit and retain a diverse community of health professionals and scholars.  We seek a community with a wide range of perspectives and experiences, and we provide equal employment opportunities to qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, political beliefs, national origin, age (40 or older), sex ( see:  Sexual Misconduct, Discrimination policy) sexual orientation, genetic information, gender identity, gender expression, disability, or veteran status.
