Responsibilities

The Success Coach - Outreach and Engagement provides programmatic support for first generation and/or low-income students participating in the High Potential Sphere of Success (HPSS), a grant-funded TRIO Student Support Services Program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. Reporting to the Faculty Director High of HPSS, the Success Coach will develop networks of support and holistic event and workshop programming to low-income and/or first generation students from diverse backgrounds over the entire course of students' undergraduate life-cycle. The Success Coach is an essential member of the High Potential program team, ensuring HPSS programs are authentically integrated into Saint Mary's diverse communities and support systems to increase educational equity and inclusive excellence through data-driven programming, institutional structures, and student success initiatives and services for TRIO/HPSS students.

1. ADVOCACY

Develop strategies and incentives to increase TRIO/HP student achievement and success. Outreach to students by creating and implementing student-centered programs, events and activities as well as attending and participating in college-wide events and programming. Collaborate and communicate clearly with campus colleagues to support student success and advocacy.

-Develop strategies and incentives to increase TRIO/HP student achievement and success through engagement with events programming in the High Potential program and the broader community. Outreach to students by creating and implementing student-centered programs, events and activities, as well as attending and participating in campus-wide events and programming. Collaborate and communicate clearly with campus colleagues to support student success and advocacy.

-Foster a culture of commencement, in collaboration with other colleagues in the division of Academic Success, to identify, develop, and recommend appropriate services designed to address student needs.

- Support TRIO/HP students through campus-wide collaboration and programming, such as new and transfer student programs, First Year Experience, First Year Advising Cohorts (FYAC), student involvement fairs, cultural graduations, residential experience, student leadership programs and clubs, and other college programs and events.

-Strategize and implement programming that prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion on campus.

-Develop an HP alumni network and collaborate with alumni to put on biannual workshops and panels pertaining to professional and career development, job readiness, and internships.

- Develop collaborative relationships with local TRIO/SSS High Schools and coordinate campus visits in partnership with Admissions

-Engage First Generation faculty and staff committee in order to advocate for HP students and better integrate them into the campus' broader first-generation community

-Serve on College committees - such as the Access & Equity committee, the College Committee on Inclusive Excellence - as needed to bring informed and well-coordinated institutional support to the TRIO/HP students. Act as a liaison with campus groups and committees to advance initiatives.

2. TRIO/HP STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND PROGRAM SERVICE

-Work collaboratively with HP staff to support students in the HP program and office, including the graduate Program Assistant, Peer Mentors, and Student Advisory Board.

-Coordinate with HP staff, support faculty, and peer mentors in the planning and implementing of the HP SAILS program for incoming students, as well as programming initiatives throughout the year.

-Establish a reliable presence in the HP office for students to seek out as a resource, and provide organizational support for connecting students with resources provided in the space.

-Integrate first-year HP students to the campus community by developing the annual HP First-Year Advising Cohort (FYAC) curriculum and coordinating tours, trainings and workshops with the FYAC instructors.

-Initiate, design, develop, and execute student, faculty, staff, and parent/family/alumni initiatives to enhance educational equity and inclusive excellence related to student success, retention, persistence, academic achievement, and graduation rates. Proactively engage TRIO/HP students and students' community during orientation, which may include creating and implementing parent and family involvement plans.

-Develop, coordinate, and/or conduct workshops, trainings, panels, pertaining academic, personal, and professional development in conjunction with Success Coaches, peer mentors, and other departments on campus. Prioritize work with the Career Center to develop a robust series of career planning workshops, panels, and trainings for all HP students

-Coordinate monthly social events and “cultural experiences” - both on and off-campus - to foster community and bonding among High Potential students.

-Coordinate the logistics and planning of key programmatic events, such as the Summer Academic Institute for Leaders and Scholars (SAILS), celebrations at the beginning and ending of the school year, and the major events for the High Potential Program such as First-Gen Day and anniversary or milestone commemorations.

3. COACHING

-Refer and connect TRIO/HP students with relevant college resources; coordinate with college and other stakeholders regarding additional outreach, support and follow up.

-Exercise cultural competence and utilize group and individual interventions such as but not limited to, educational and career planning, crisis management, referral services to college resources, decision-making, transition management, personal growth and development, social adjustments, and goal setting.

4. ADMINISTRATION, RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT

-Track student participation in required TRIO program activities using archivable tools. Implement and manage accountability standards for student services to ensure student success. Conduct assessments and evaluations of coaching, engagement, advocacy and outreach.

-Maintain budget expectations and guidelines related to assigned projects and programs with the Director.

-Develop and suggest policies, procedures and processes related to TRIO/HP student success with the Director.

-Collaborate on grant writing and fundraising opportunities to increase financial capacity to support HP students in making college education affordable.

5. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

-Stay current on best practices for student success and working with diverse college students.

-Invest in expanding your own areas of professional exploration and deepening of professional expertise.

Experience and Qualifications

Education:

REQUIRED: Baccalaureate and Master's degree highly preferred

PREFERRED: Degree, coursework, and/or experience in areas related to one or more of the following: higher education, education, counseling, college student services.

Experience:

3-5 years in higher education, non-profit, or equivalent.

1-3 years working with students from underserved populations including low-income and/or first-generation college students.

Skills/Abilities:

-Strong written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.

-Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

-Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations across race, class, gender, sexuality, age, and/or ability.

-Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented students in secondary or postsecondary setting

.-Strong belief in the ability for first generation and low income students to succeed in college.

-Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively with college students.

-Commitment to a strengths-based style of interaction designed to move students from dependence, to independence, to interdependence.
