The Assistant Director oversees all aspects of facility operations of the Sarkeys Fitness Center.  Also has direct or indirect oversite of programs such as personal training, climbing wall, and fitness programs.  Directly supervises about three temporary/student employees and three full time staff who are responsible for nearly 70 student staff positions and full-time support staff.   

 

Typical Duties:

  • Oversee all aspects of facility operations at the Sarkeys Fitness Center - encompasses front desk operations, customer service, and emergency response.
  • Assess facility, program, and member needs to provide a satisfying and cost-effective campus recreation experience.
  • Fitness program involvement including instructor hire/training/evaluation, scheduling, daily room set-up planning and coordination, financial record keeping, members support, IM Leagues management, and teaching classes.
  • Supervise all full-time coordinators for Sarkeys Fitness Center facility operations including guidance and support, payroll management, and annual performance appraisals.
  • Assist with the oversight of programs such as personal training, and American Heart Association including program development/improvement, scheduling, hiring, staff training, and program assessment.
  • Facilitate purchase of large and small equipment for Sarkeys Fitness center including assisting Purchasing with research, recommendations, requesting/receiving bids, requisitions and scheduling deliveries.
  • Assist director with budget planning and updates for annual to 10-year projections.
  • Assist in training and management of facility emergency action plans, including staff training in CPR, AED, First Aid and facility policies for fire, tornado, accidents and incidents. 

 

 

 

Job Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree, AND: 

  • 48 months of program development, program management or related experience

Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the bachelor's degree for a total of 96 months of related experience

 

Skills:

  • Understanding of facility management and supervising others
  • Good customer service skills,
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office
  • Basic data analysis, effective oral and written communication
  • Must be able to make decisions quickly in a high pressure situation, work independently, meet deadlines, be organized and manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Receive and understand detailed directions or directives orally or written.  

Certifications:

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Must lift equipment and other objects up to but not limited to 25 lbs.- Occasionally
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move with haste for extended amounts of time- Occasionally
  • Must be able to pull or push objects with upper and lower body- Occasionally
  • Must be able to reach above head or stoop down- Occasionally
  • Physical stress exposure- Frequent (hot, cold, windy, dirty, or loud climate)

Department Preferences:

  • Degree in Health and Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Adult and Higher Education, or Related field
  • Master's Degree in Health and Exercise Science, Wellness, Higher Education, Human Relations, Marketing, or equivalent
  • 36+ months experience with facility management and supervising others
  • Certified American Heart Association BLS Instructor; fitness certifications

Supervision: Will supervise three student staff and three full-time personnel.  Position will report to the Director.
