College/Department Information

Established in the summer of 2002, the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CBGM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) was developed to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine with the ultimate goal of promoting predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (4P) medicine. The Center's research efforts focus on two main areas: 1) discovery and validation of biomarkers for disease prediction and diagnosis, 2) pharmacomics and drug discovery for personalized medicine. CBGM is home of four internationally renowned programs in diabetes research: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY), the Prospective Assessment in Newborns of Diabetes Autoimmunity (PANDA), the Diabetic Complications Consortium (DiaComp) and the Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Consortium (MMPC). Additional research programs include autoimmune diseases, transplantation, and cancer. These research programs are supported by an annual extramural funding of approximately $12 million. The center houses several state-of-the-art high throughput and high content facilities for genetics, genomics, proteomics, drug screening and bioinformatics. The center continues to recruit independent investigators with expertise in diverse disciplines such as genomics, proteomics, immunology, medicinal chemistry, drug development, biostatistics and computational biology. This multidisciplinary approach provides an avenue for investigators to interact and stimulate novel ideas.

Job Summary

The Research Assistant will perform technical work in support of on-going research projects; participate in data collection and documentation, development and evaluate new research techniques and procedures, and perform a variety of complex biochemical, in vitro and in vivo research laboratory procedures; maintain a detailed and organized notebook with procedures and data; analyze results and procedures.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:
Cell Culture:Growing cells and treating for immunoassay analysis
Western Blotting:PCR in tissue cells for DNA/RNA extraction
Animals: Animal handling and surgeries
Molecular Biology: Molecular biology techniques in live animal imaging using OCT and ERG
Animal Ordering: Animal ordering and maintenance of inventory, protocols, SOP
Microscopy: Microscopy (fluorescence and confocal) ' staining various markers
Assist PI: Assisting PI and Postdocs in project experiments and data analysis using graphpad and Image J
Other: Perform all other related duties/tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research OR Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of western blotting; Experience in small animal surgery; cell culture; Immunohistochemistry and western blotting, Transfection and transduction.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to maintain confidentiality
Willingness and ability to work with research animals
Ability to use sound judgement and work independently
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases or willingness to learn

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required) 

Pay Grade: R9

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
