College/Department Information

The mission of the Augusta University Police Department is to promote a safe atmosphere in which the university's teaching, discovery, clinical care and service mission can be successful. This is accomplished through traditional and progressive law enforcement practices and strong community partnership.

Job Summary

The Lieutenant is responsible for meeting the law enforcement and public safety needs of the University community and is responsible for the overall supervision and daily operations of a unit within the assigned division. The person in this role provides supervision to all assigned personnel, evaluates personnel performance and directs the activities of the entire unit. The Lieutenant's duties include specialties in some or all of the following areas: law enforcement on and around the university campus, standards and training, criminal investigations, crime prevention, motorist assistance, traffic enforcement and police/security related technologies.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:
Leadership, Management, and Supervision 
Responsible for overall leadership, management and supervision of a specific unit within a division of the police department and directs activities of the entire unit

Reports and Cases 
Prepares and analyzes reports and cases, setting forth unit activities and appropriate recommendations for improved police procedures through training of member of the unit; If assigned to Division of Professional Standards, ensure that department members are trained to the highest standards in modern policing practice, trained in department's policy and procedure, USG standards and has complete oversight and administration of the department's FTO program; Ensure department members are in compliance with Georgia POST standards and have met all requirements on an ongoing basis
Practices 
Research, analyze and implement modern police practices and methods of police administration, organization, operation, training and investigation through use of local, state and federal resources and trade associations and publications
Provide Guidance 
Assess subordinates' job performance; Review reports and cases with subordinates as appropriate and provide guidance and direction through coaching and career development

Action Plans and Special Events 
May be responsible for development and implementation of incident Action Plans for large scale planned and unplanned events effected the safety and security of the community; May be responsible for planning, organizing and working special events for the University/AU Health

Police 
Performs the functions and duties of a Georgia POST police (peace) officer
Other Duties
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited College or University OR High School Diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized state or federal accrediting organization with five years of Police Officer experience to include a minimum of three years in a direct supervisory role in the Police Service; Must be POST Certified or ability to obtain within one year.

ABILITIES
Knowledge of standard police practices and techniques
Ability to keep complex records and maintain confidentiality
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases
Excellent leadership, management, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Ability to exercise sound judgment and make responsible decisions under stressful conditions and perform well in a calm and efficient manner
Knowledge and skill in the use of firearms, criminal justice system, law enforcement techniques and procedures and management principles and techniques
Ability to make appropriate decisions regarding use of force, arrests, traffic citations, criminal investigations, emergency responses and other police related procedures

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)

Pay Grade: 18

Salary: Minimum $48,341.00/Annually - $65,260.00/Annually

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position

Conditions of Employment

All selected candidates are required to successfully pass a Background Check review prior to starting with Augusta University.

Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive an Augusta University vehicle.

The Human Resources Division will request a driver's history report for the identified top candidate(s) for this position. We will initiate this through our Background Check Vendor; this report will come from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The selected candidate must have a valid driver's license.
