Job Description

Are you an independent researcher with a research focus on Holocaust Literature, especially literature written in Eastern European or Jewish languages? Do you have an interest in how Holocaust Literature has evolved over time in different contexts, had become canonical, and circulates globally? Would you like to deepen your understanding of this research field and add to its development?

You will contribute to an international research collaboration on Holocaust Literature led by Professor Stuart Taberner and Professor Erin McGlothlin (Washington University in St. Louis, USA). Two positions are available at Leeds and a further position is available at Washington University in St. Louis. We are likely to interview for all three posts together.

The project, funded by an AHRC Large Research Award, brings together an international team of around 40 scholars to rethink the history of Holocaust Literature (HL) in relation to three areas of focus: the contexts in which HL was written, published, and received; the ways in which texts have become canonical, including the role of publishing houses, editors, translators, the media, etc; how HL circulates (or does not circulate) globally across borders, languages, and cultures. You will contribute as editor, author, and facilitator to the three main outcomes of the project:

1. The Cambridge History of Holocaust Literature, to be published by Cambridge University Press;

2. A second volume aimed at students;

3. An international programme of public engagement.

You will identify your own specific interests in this broad area, work autonomously on your contributions to the two volumes, and work on the public programme. You will assist with the logistics for project workshops and conferences, and will be funded to travel and potentially to spend time with colleagues working on the project at Washington University in St. Louis, USA.

We are interested in applicants with expertise in any area of Holocaust Literature, although applicants with fluency in Eastern Europe and Jewish languages and knowledge of texts written in those languages may be preferred. The project is designed to be iterative and collaborative so we are especially keen to interview applicants who are able and willing to engage with our team of international scholars, explore connections, and incorporate this learning into their own thinking and their own contributions.
