Job Description

Do you want to take on the challenge of running a world class facility doing cutting edge research on fluid dynamics? Do you have an interest in developing the next generation of nuclear engineering techniques that will underpin the UK’s nuclear rebuild? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

We are seeking an Experimental Officer to work at the School of Chemical and Process Engineering (SCAPE) and run the MUFFIN Experimental Facility; a multiphase fluid flow facility, MUFFIN (MUltiphase Fluid Flow In Nuclear systems), with the dedicated aim to enable world class research on multiphase fluid flow, at a scale that is representative of a real system.

ESPRC has announced that the University of Leeds, led by SCAPE, is the latest institution to join the UK’s National Nuclear User Facility (NNUF). The NNUF project is a Government investment in the UK’s nuclear future, providing state-of-the-art experimental facilities for research and development in nuclear science and technology (more details at https://www.nnuf.ac.uk/home).

At present the project is in the design phase, with the build expected to commence in January 2023. Once build is complete, testing and commissioning will need to be carried out, with a target opening date of the 1st October 2023 when users will be able to come in and access the facility.

As the Experimental Officer for the facility, you will work with the construction team on the build phase and you’ll be responsible for testing and commissioning; getting everything ready for the opening date. Once the facility is open for business, you’ll manage access and be there to assist researcher’s plans, set up and conduct their experiments. MUFFIN will be fully web connected to allow remote access and operation, so monitoring day-to-day activities, especially for external users, will be an important part of your role.
