Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position is responsible for supporting and developing processes and technology for the department. Plans and conducts engineering research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.

Department Overview:
This position will be responsible for supporting research and development of the Cyber Lab for Industrial Control Systems (CLICS) that includes the research focus on emerging technologies
in support of operational security control. This includes vulnerability assessments, diagnosing internet/extranet security, intrusion attempts, incident responses, forensic analysis, and
coordination of disaster recovery.

Level Scope:
Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:
60% of Time the Research Engineer must:
● Conduct research to identify solutions for departments need
● Develop concepts for existing or new processes or equipment relevant to the department
● Design industry-relevant products, equipment or technology based on concepts and ensuring functionality
● Building product and system prototypes for testing purposes
● Using specialized equipment to analyze and test processes, equipment or materials
● Using statistical processes to assess data
● Coordinate timelines, resources and tasks to achieve project goals as project leader
● Preparing reports summarizing tests and their findings
● Writing research related grant proposals

35% of the time:

Support and Maintenance
● Responsible for the specification, purchasing, installation, maintenance, programming and
operation of the lab equipment.
● Support and maintain existing software and hardware systems in the lab including the
Honeywell Experion system, the SEL power grid system, and the Allen Bradley four tank
system.
● Help design, develop, construct and program new laboratory systems for research and
teaching needs utilizing the systems in place and other process control systems and PLC
systems
● Integrate required physical control devices into lab systems including devices such as
pressure transducers, control valves, temperature monitors, flow controllers, and closed
loop process controllers.
● Evaluate lab equipment needs and review proposals from equipment providers including
GE, Honeywell, SEL, Siemens, and other industry partners as needed.

Research
● Investigate and propose possible research directions in the area of cybersecurity for
process control systems.
● Implement a real-time grid simulation with RTDS simulator
● Assist in preparing and submitting research proposals.
● Establish experimental and forensic testing protocols, and conduct experimental
investigations as required to evaluate and text cybersecurity threats to critical physical
infrastructure systems.
● Help evaluate cyber security risks and mitigation strategies for industry partners.
● Publish research findings and results as necessary.

Education/Training
● Assist in establishing graduate and undergraduate training programs in the area of
industrial control cyber security.
● Assist in developing community outreach programs.
● Assist in preparing and submitting education proposals.
