Qualifications:

TED 502-02 - Teaching Emergent Multilingual Students

In person - Moraga, CA campus, August 29, 2022 - December 5, 2022, Mondays, 4:15pm - 7:00pm

This course prepares teacher candidates to support emergent multilingual students as general education elementary or secondary teachers or education specialists. The course introduces students to research and theory on additional language development, state and federal policies governing the education of English learners, and different instructional program models for serving multilingual students. Candidates learn how to scaffold and differentiate literacy and content instruction for students who are learning English and how to create opportunities for English language development across the curriculum. In addition, students learn how to use formative assessment practices and design culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy, as well as how to collaborate with multilingual families to support their children’s learning.

Qualifications:


Master's Degree in Education (or related field) and valid CA teaching credential


5 years of experience teaching in K-12 settings in settings with significant numbers of students who are designated as English learners with preference given to more recent K-12 experience with the new ELD standards


Experience designing and enacting scaffolded and differentiated literacy and content instruction for students at different English language proficiency levels


Experience integrating English language development with content instruction


Knowledge of research and theory on second/additional language development, state and federal policies related to English learners, and different instructional program models for students who are learning English


Experience teaching college level English Language teaching preparation courses is preferred but not required.
