Position Description

Rider University invites applications for a Sergeant in the Department of Public Safety.  The Public Safety Sergeant is the shift supervisor and supports the educational mission of Rider University; they provide the leadership, supervision and training for subordinate public safety personnel and student workers during shifts and special events (extra duty assignments) in order to ensure proper functioning of day-to-day public safety operations. Supervises Officers and patrols campus property and buildings by foot, vehicle, and/or bike; responds to calls for assistance, fire, burglary alarms, and emergencies on campus; and completes and files reports. 

Position Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of four years experience in law enforcement, security, emergency medical technician, fire fighter or US military service. 
  • Satisfactory completion of an approved police/law enforcement-training academy or security officer training. 
  • Must be able to prepare, understand, correct incident, investigation and operational reports.
  • Flexibility and ability to work any shift, any day of the week including extra duty assignments.
  • Willingness and ability to work scheduled & non-scheduled and overtime hours. 
  • Must have excellent customer service, communication and de-escalation skills. 
  • Must have experience working with a diverse community and committed to inclusive excellence.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. 
  • Must have demonstrated effective communication skills and the ability to perform well under pressure situations. 
  • Must possess the physical condition necessary to fulfill duties.

Position Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience working in a college or university environment.  
  • Bachelors or Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Sociology or a related field desired but not necessary.  A Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Sociology or a related field can be used as a one-year equivalent for one year of public safety or security experience.
