Job Summary
The STEM Ambassador Program (STEMAP, is seeking a part-time temporary employee to deliver public engagement and science communication training during the summer 2021 semester. Trainings will be delivered online with the possibility of some in-person work at the University of Utah campus pending public health guidance.

STEMAP guides scientists (faculty, post docs, graduate students, and research staff in science, technology, engineering, and math fields) to build community partnerships and carry out public engagement projects. Projects take place in non-traditional learning venues, such as correctional facilities, senior centers, and public parks, to expand public access to science.

This position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting Agreement.

The employee will be responsible for:
1. Using the STEMAP training manual to guide a cohort of 34 scientists through the process of designing and implementing public engagement projects
2. Conducting interviews with scientist trainees to help them identify their engagement interests
3. Leading online public engagement workshops and group meetings to guide scientists to build community relationships, design appropriate engagement projects, build communication skills to carry out projects, and reflect on outcomes
4. Reviewing scientist project proposals and offering one-on-one support
5. Coordinating evaluation for engagement projects with an external evaluator
6. Working with STEMAP staff to summarize engagement outcomes and publish projects in the STEMAP newsletter
7. Organizing training materials in STEMAP’s online course
8. Assisting the STEMAP Manager with other tasks and trainings as needed

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education), and two years related experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Excellent organizational, communication, presentation, and writing skills.

Experience leading trainings and workshops

Familiarity with science communication, public engagement, and education literature

Experience forming partnerships with community organizations
