A part of the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas was founded in 1905 and is a nationally recognized center for oral health sciences education, research, specialized patient care and continuing dental education.

What we want The College of Dentistry is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a member of the research team. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The successful applicant will bring a basic level of experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting the principal investigator. Job Summary: Assist the principal investigator/manager with research project by performing biological experiments, maintaining the mouse colony and performing general lab duties.

Required Education and Experience:

Appropriate bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Preferred Education and Experience:

B.A. or B.S. in Chemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology,Genetics, Microbiology or similar field.
Experience in a laboratory environment, preferably a research-oriented lab.
Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic math skills and chemical knowledge needed to calculate concentrations for making and adjusting pH of solutions, etc.
Ability and willingness to learn and master new concepts and techniques. Ability to organize and manage time and adhere to schedules.
Must be willing to work with mice and dissect mouse tissues.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Experience using equipment commonly found in a biological research lab, including pipettors, electrophoreses equipment, balances, thermal cyclers, fume hoods, and/or biological cabinets.
Experience in DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and other enzymatic reactions.
Experience working with mice.
Histology experience, including use of microtome, cryostat, histological staining techniques.

Molecular biology

Purify DNA from mouse tissues for PCR genotyping.
Gel electrophoresis.
Assist in molecular biological experiments and maintain detailed notes.
Section tissues and prepare slides; perform various histological staining techniques.
Mouse colony maintenance

Assist in handling mice, including weaning, mating, collection of tail samples.
Dissection of mouse tissues for cell isolation and culture, flow sorting, or histology.
General lab duties

Make stock buffers and solutions as needed.
Monitor and maintain bench equipment (e.g:water baths, thermal cyclers, fill liquid nitrogen dewar, test emergency eye wash).
Order chemicals and other lab supplies.
Wash and put away glassware.
Autoclave solutions, pipets, biological waste.
Other Duties

Assist in transporting samples to other locations in town, such as to off-campus facilities for flow sorting or live cell imaging, and assisting in experiments at those locations.
