Job Summary
Wolverine Pathways Math InstructorCompensation: $22-35/hour

This is a part-time temporary position.

The University of Michigan Wolverine Pathways (WP) is a supplementary education program established to increase the high school graduation rate and college acceptance and retention rates of academically promising scholars residing within the public school boundaries of Detroit, Southfield, and Ypsilanti. All instructors employed with Wolverine Pathways will demonstrate exemplary service and expertise in their given subject area. This position requires instructors to deliver high quality virtual math instruction for highly motivated rising 8th through rising 10th grade scholars. The instructional program will utilize Khan Academy and also provide opportunities for peer interaction and problem solving that provide academic challenge and cultivate scholars’ mathematical thinking.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan leads and supports university-wide initiatives focused on the recruitment of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body, while fostering an inclusive and equitable University community. Our office also engages surrounding communities in mission-focused, mutually beneficial partnerships.In support of this overarching effort, three units within our office - the Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives (OAMI), and Wolverine Pathways - all work closely with ODEI to further the strategic vision of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of Michigan.

Responsibilities*
Specific responsibilities include providing the following via remote instruction to a group of 30-35 scholars in grades 8, 9, or 10:

Monitoring, documenting, and assessing scholar engagement and performance on Khan Academy platform
Facilitating synchronous whole group and/or half group sessions that cultivate community and norm-setting and that orient scholars to and transition them between math activities
Monitoring and/or facilitating synchronous small group student-led sessions that support student mathematical stretch, problem-solving, and independence (4-6 students per group)
Providing one-on-one math tutoring for students who require additional support
Engaging in weekly check-ins with remote math lead and/or receiving professional development or coaching with remote math lead as is warranted

20 hours per week
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor’s degree in education, mathematics or related specialization
Experience with inquiry-based teaching approaches
Experience teaching or tutoring Algebra I through Pre-Calculus (i,e, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus)
Background or experience with diverse populations
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Desire to be an advocate for the development of students
Demonstrated dynamism and creativity in implementing lessons
Demonstrated competencies to include: displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; managing time effectively; working effectively one-on-one and in group or team settings
Able to attend pre-session training/professional development sessions
