Job Purpose

The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory (BRL) resides within the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, and participates in several national and international genomic, transcriptomic, and precision medicine projects. As members of ClinGen, https://clinicalgenome.org/, BRL is developing resources for understanding the clinical relevance of genes and variants for applications in precision medicine. BRL also leads data coordination and resource development for the Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium (ERCC), https://exrna.org/, an NIH consortium focused on understanding the role of extracellular RNA and exosomes, and their potential use as biomarkers. Following completion of ERCC Stage I (2013-2019) NIH has provided additional funding for ERCC Stage II (2019-2023), which will focus on developing advanced methods for exRNA and exRNA carrier identification and characterization. We therefore have several exciting opportunities available in ClinGen and the ERCC.

The Lead Bioinformatics Programmer will act as a Product Owner for the tools and services developed for the exRNA consortium. This position will be responsible for: setting, prioritizing, and evaluating the requests of the external collaborators and stakeholders in the exRNA consortium; attend web conference calls to gather requirements from the stakeholders and users; work closely with the internal software development team to plan and prioritize the tools and products; ensure that the tools and products are developed, tested and delivered on time; prepare user documentation and educate users on the new functionalities developed; assess requests, develop use cases and manage timelines.

Job Duties
  • Prepares detailed specifications and algorithms from which programs will be written.
  • Applies existing custom bioinformatics software to both well-defined and complex problems.
  • Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and maintains programs and research software for bioinformatics applications.
  • Researches, assesses, imports, configures, and customizes third-party bioinformatics software.
  • Advises on hardware and software decisions related to efficient application of implemented software.
  • Provides technical guidance and work direction to lower level bioinformatics and information systems personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
