Job Description

We are looking for candidates for postdoctoral fellowships to join the Decision Support Lab in the Department of Health Services Research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Under the mentorship of Dr. Robert J. Volk, this postdoctoral fellowship will provide individuals with the opportunity to contribute to the design, implementation, analysis, and publication of studies focusing on patient decision making. In particular, this fellowship will center on the challenges associated with delivering high quality decision support for lung cancer screening including tobacco cessation. Primary focus of research will concentrate on priority populations including patients with low health literacy, patients whose primary language is not English, those with mental health problems and high rates of tobacco use, and patients with disabilities for whom current decision support tools are not accessible.

Opportunities in this fellowship include:

• Developing and testing methods for presenting risk information and uncertainty to patients,
• Developing and testing methods and instruments for assessing the quality of patient decision making,
• Developing and testing methods of assessing preferences in making decisions about screening and tobacco cessation, and
• Collaborating on other projects in decision science across the cancer care spectrum.

Qualified candidates should have a doctorate in health services, public health, psychology, epidemiology, biostatistics, engineering, informatics, human factors, graphic design, or a related field. Prior experience in tobacco cessation, secondary prevention, health services, or decision making research is strongly preferred. Publications in decision science and strong statistical skills are important. All candidates must have evidence of strong writing skills.

The Decision Support Lab is an innovative program that brings together multidisciplinary teams of clinicians, researchers, and patients to design novel multimedia patient decision support tools to prepare patients for more productive discussions with their healthcare providers by helping them understand complex medical information, including the benefits and risks associated with screenings and treatments. By using high-quality research evidence in cancer care, the Decision Support Lab works toward the goal of promoting informed medical decision-making across the cancer spectrum.

Applicants selected for this fellowship will have a one- to two-year, full-time research postdoctoral position with competitive salary and benefits.
