Position Summary
As a member of Rice’s Information Technology division, the Systems Administrator will be responsible for providing advanced level support for the establishment and continued efficient operation of the Windows systems supported by Advanced Client Services. The Systems Administrator will work with other Information System staff to integrate systems into the practices and procedures used by Information Systems to support Rice’s computing systems and the campus networking environment. This position will monitor, analyze and debug system issues. The Systems Administrator may be required to interact with Information Technology Executive Committee on specific projects.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree
Engineering, computer science, or related discipline.

Substitution for Education Requirement
May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an
equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement.

Type of Experience
Related experience as a system administrator in a corporate or education environment administering and supporting Virtualization technologies for endpoints and servers (VMware-ESX, vsphere, view, Horizon 6-7,ThinApp) along with administration and support of Windows 7 or higher and Windows Server 2012 or higher.

Experience Preferred
- Large scale deployments and upgrades to Windows 10 Enterprise operating systems
- Support and administration Windows Active Directory
- Advanced knowledge of Group Policy (GPO)
- Experience using Microsoft SCCM for application deployment
- Experience with remotely troubleshooting and resolving issues
- Experience utilizing VDI environments in an education environment, preferably for Learning or Research
- Experience with VDI and published applications (VMware Horizon, Citrix Xenapp, Xendesktop,
- Administration and support of Advanced Virtualization technologies (VMware – NSX, AppDefense, vRealize, vSAN)
- Experience configuration and administration of cloud desktop services – Desktop As A Service (DaaS)– Azure Virtual Desktop, AWS Workspaces, Horizon Cloud
- Experience working with systems a highly secure environment following NIST, FERPA, HIPPA and other regulations
- Familiarity with Linux Redhat and Satellite

License/Certification Required
License/Certification Preferred
- Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) Certification
- Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist SCCM Training/Certification
- Microsoft Certified Associate Modern Desktop Administrator
- VMware VCP
- Azure or AWS Training or Certifications

- Demonstrated knowledge of IT security practices

- Understanding of Business Process Analysis
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to apply a developed subject matter knowledge to solve common and complex issues within established guidelines and by recommending appropriate variances
- Ability to review application and usage requirements and recommend hardware requirements (CPU, RAM, Storage)
- Ability to review application and usage requirements and recommend network configuration requirements (Logical, Physical)
- Ability to troubleshooting and diagnose network connectivity issues (VPN, Wireless and LAN)
- General knowledge of the Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS cloud infrastructure as a service models
- Understanding of regulatory standards such as NIST, FERPA, HIPPA and others

Internal / External Contacts
- Daily contact with students, faculty, administrative staff and collaborators
- Frequent contact by telephone and in person with vendors to facilitate installation of new products and maintenance of existing system
- Frequent contact with persons employed by Rice University. Some contact with persons not employed by Rice University

Physical Demands
Must be able to move computer equipment, up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions
- Will be required to carry a cell phone/pager and be reachable during off hours as determined by management
- May be called at night or on weekends to resolve system problems and/or major systems transitions
- Designated as an essential employee to be called upon during emergencies
- Non-smoking environment
