The Marketing and Communication Division is searching for a Director of Media Relations and Issues Management. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. In this role, you will play a critical role in setting and implementing external strategies to address and manage a portfolio of current and emerging issues that pose a reputational risk to CMU. Reporting to the Sr. Director of News and Media Relations, you will serve as spokesperson across local, national and international press, oversee media relations responses and proactive coordination of media pitches and storytelling, and will be responsible for maintaining strong relationships with key reporters and other members of the press.

Core responsibilities will include:

Work with senior director of external relations and associate vice president to counsel senior leadership on media relations activities;
Act as spokesperson on a variety of issues and topics, as assigned;
Develop strategic media relations plan that includes issues management and risk assessment components;
Foster relationships with key local, national and international members of the press;
Manage two-person media relations team, and coordinates with communicators across campus;
Assist in developing and executing national media roundtable initiative;
Produce multimedia components to amplify media coverage;
Coordinate national media visits for faculty and leadership;
Coordinate and collaborate with the Senior Director of Media Relations on the innovative use of social media to support and promote other forms of storytelling;
Newsroom and campaign-style planning to ensure long-term success of message penetration; and
Work closely with Assistant Vice President of Content and Communications and senior staff to shape key university messages to ensure consistent messaging across channels.

You will demonstrate:

Experience in building and executing critical communications plans;
Deep understanding and background in issues management;
Superior news judgement, persuasive communications skills and an outgoing personality;
On-air experience or experience as spokesperson;
Strong writer and editor/ability to write for different audiences utilizing different forms of storytelling;
Multimedia capabilities (photography, shoot and edit video, graphics and web);
Work independently and effectively, and manage multiple projects at a time in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
A high level of integrity, trustworthiness, respect and team collaboration; and
Research skills and an eye for business with a fluency in topical news and culture.

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, business, or other relevant field; Master’s highly desired.
Minimum of eight years as a leader in multi-channel content creation.
Management experience required; ability to lead and inspire a campus of content creators and creative personnel to achieve goals.
Ability to work after hours and on weekends when appropriate.
